Firefox 2 out

There’s this really cute puppy that one of my colleagues brings to work sometimes:

Firefox puppy!

Her name is officially Olwen, and someday she’ll grow into her big, big ears:

Firefox puppy!

I refuse to call her Olwen. Can you guess what I call her? That’s right, I call her Firefox. πŸ™‚ Can you see the similarity?

Firefox puppy!

Here, compare with this picture of the original Firefox:

By the way, Firefox 2 is out. It pretty much rocks the house. What, you want more info and fewer puppy pictures? Start reading here. Then download here.

  1. Dude, what is this – πŸ˜‰

See you at PubCon bro, I’ll teach you how to make more manly posts!

  2. Matt is she a Corgi? A little hard to tell in a few of the pictures.

  3. Joe – you guessed my wife’s favorite site. πŸ™‚

  4. Man, what is up with those ears on the last image? Are you certain it’s not a dossum bread!? like a dog and a possum…. πŸ˜‰

  5. nofollow links shouldn’t be highlighted red by default. what does the average user know about the nofollow attribute. he probably thinks this link is leading to a phishing site.

  6. Matt, what race is that?
    She’s REALLY cute! πŸ™‚

  7. my bad. seo 4 firefox was automatically updated an highlighting nofollow links was one of its new features.

  8. Do you have a ThunderBird too? πŸ™‚ great improvements for Firefox 2, btw i can’t wait for Google Toolbar for FF to show Google Bookmarks..

  9. I think you might want wander over to:

  10. Matt,

Question on Firefox. Any particular reason does not show the links in the same order as the default google home page i.e. no videos link.

Is this an oversight on part of Google’s part? is the default home page for firefox 1.5.

  11. Arrrghhhh !

    Damn copy/paste bug in FF.

    Try *this* one.

(although the other cartoon is still quite relevent for Londoners using public transport)

  12. That puppy is too cute. That’s gonna make me smile all day πŸ™‚

  13. Finnaly Firefox 2 is out.

I just can’t stop my IE 7 from crashing.

  14. Awwwwww!

  15. Make sure your colleague has pet health insurance for Olwen!

  16. Those pictures are incredible. πŸ™‚

[Insert witty pun about dog and browser named firefox]

  17. My girlfriend came in while I was reading this and is now insisting I get her a FireFox puppy……. She also wants a baby penguin and a monkey too πŸ˜‰

Only downside to 2.0 for me is the Add N Edit cookies extension isn’t compatible. Last night I loaded up FF and it said update these extensions, that’s pretty cool as I didn’t have to check and didn’t have to restart.

Hopefully they’ve fixed the aweful bug that decides to eat your bookmarks at seemingly random intervals.

  18. I’m aware this isn’t your department, but after installing FireFox 2.0 it crashed like crazy for me. After reading through the docs, I disabled all my extensions and start enabling them one by one to figure out what the problem was.

Turns out the Google Toolbar was the problem. I’m assuming it isn’t happening to everyone and I have no idea why it’s happening.

Guess I really don’t need it since FF 2.0 has it’s own Spell Checker.

  19. If my wife saw that dog for sale, we’d have a dog. Heck, I’d buy him too. Soooo cute. Oh and Firefox 2 rocks!

  20. > Guess I really don’t need it since FF 2.0 has it’s own Spell Checker.

I used the FF2 native spellchecker for a day but then I realized it chokes on German*, so now I’m back to the Google Toolbar’s spellchecker. The extra-click ain’t bad as sometimes instant spellchecking is annoying anyway… like when you’re writing HTML in a textarea.

*Anyone knows if they have dictionary downloads for every language?

  21. am a fan of firefox! i love their new version 2.0. By the way, nice puppies Matt!

  22. I can really relate to dogs and am getting this urge to nibble that pups ear. =P

Firefox is just so darn cool because it is a product of the people by the people.

  23. Ian, your firefox puppy is both cute and disturbing. πŸ™‚

Huh; thanks for mentioning that, Chris.

Thomas, then whatever you do, don’t click on this link. πŸ˜‰

  24. Yep, installed FF 2.0 and it is crashing every 15 minutes or so. I’ll take the advice from Chris and disable Toolbar, though I do use it a lot!

  25. Why do Americans love small dogs? Especially not a clean breed? Did people forget about real dogs like German Shepherds and Boxers, (my 2 favorites).

    Anyway …

Almost ready to try Firefox but being a “caucious fella” I’ll wait a week to hear about bugs (if any).

By the way Matt !!! Where can I get this SPAM plug in you have to make people do Math before they can comment? I get over 200+ spam comments a day that I need to reject. Help me out please.

  26. Igor’s right. Small dogs are okay, but big dogs tend to be smarter, easier to train, and more fun. At least this is what I’ve found from my experience with both.

The only problem with big dogs is they’re a lot more expensive from a maintenance standpoint and they tend not to live as long.

I tend to wait about a month though as far as bug reports/fixes go, so I won’t download either until the middle of November.

  27. It looks like a different dog in pic 2

  28. Love the pics. They are sooo cute. Firefox 2 does rock and I can’t stop saying how much I love the themes… especially the noia theme it so rocks. And all my little extensions. They are like little electronic toys.

  29. Hey Matt,

How old is she, that cute Firefox πŸ™‚

  30. And I thought I was being too cutesy with my Technorati Profile avatar.

Really though, I haven’t laughed this hard since I read “Shoemoney feel the heat?”

    Thanks Matt!

  31. I’m pickier than you. Not only do I refuse to call her Olwen, I also refuse to call her Firefox. I will call her Iceweasel.

  32. Maybe this is just a setting but I noticed the new IE does the same thing… when you open a new tab.. it doesnt load your homepage…

  33. I agree about small dogs. Most of the time if I see a dog smaller than my cat, I proclaim, “That there just ain’t a dog at all.” Which is quite often, unfortunately, thanks in part to the Paris-Hilton disciples and their toy pooches.

Frankly I find that large dogs are helpful, useful, and loads of fun. Great for hunting. But women seem to hate ’em, and don’t like hunting much, either.

I guess things are just changing around here. In the meanby, ’tis nice to be in Texas …

  34. That is the cutest puppy! Now if we can find a dog that looks like the logo for Goooooogle….maybe one of those “hot dog” dogs could be shaved to put the “ooooooo” across his/her body….Geez, I got work to do, adios πŸ™‚

  35. Olwen is adorable, oh what a sweet puppy having a life of luxury lying down of a antique handmade Baluchi rug!!

  36. Russell !

“Olwen is adorable, oh what a sweet puppy having a life of luxury lying down of a antique handmade Baluchi rug!!”

You want to see somebody living in luxury?

    How about this cute
    GoogleGirl πŸ™‚

  37. Omg! Real nice puppy. Which race is it?

  38. Matt,

I think this puppy is distracting you from your work. πŸ™‚

  39. Well….. its better than the review.. my 4 year old daughter thinks hes cute…. so for a change im not gonna moan at you…

Now promise you wont moan back Matt or we will fall out again…

  40. Beats me Matt. IE 7 works for me! πŸ™‚ It even lets me post on your site!

  41. Cute pup! Microsoft sent the fine folks at Mozilla a cake for congratulations on the release of 2.0. They can now have their cake… and eat it to. Heh.

  42. I’m glad you enjoyed the post, SEOidiot. πŸ™‚

  43. I installed firefox 2 and it whipped out all of my bookmarks. Not only that it wont like me bookmark and page. Anyone have a suggestion?

  44. Haha, so funny, compare the real puppy with the logo of Firefox ^_^

  45. I installed firefox 2 and it whipped out all of my bookmarks. Not only that it wont like me bookmark and page. Anyone have a suggestion?

    Digg is your friend:

  46. Hey Matt, dont be so not educated πŸ˜‰ FireFox is not a Fox, it is from a bear πŸ˜‰ check out wikipedia πŸ˜‰

  47. Dude!

I liked most your Firefox picture

  48. Very nice, I always wondered where the logo came from, that’s a really cute dog.

  49. my laptop crushed simultaneously with Firefox 2 release (((
    Envy you, guys )

  50. See Matt we can be civil….. you know you like me really now dont you ….

  51. I guess I can’t resist posting of my Search Engine Watch Kitten

  52. Hello,

Nice dog, first of all what kind is it? It reminds me of a desert fox that my son works with at his job.

I have a new blog that is targeted to fellow traders. I would like to build a website for traders to download their trades for analysis. I think I need an AJAX interface, although I really don’t know too much of what I am talking about. If there is anyone that I can just bs with about with email me at Not sure if this meets your guidelines but WTH.

  53. Interesting that you get 4 to 5 times the coment on a cute puppy story than you do on the more serious ones – won’t the cats get jelous

  54. It keeps crashing on me too πŸ™

I may have to switch to IE7……….

    (My dogs are cuter, btw)

  55. Real nice puppy!!!

  56. Puppies…. they just look adorable. I’ve got 9 dogs at home now, and in chinese, 9 also sounds like dogs….

I’m gonna try and add my little puppies to my blog too next time.

I think breed of the dogs are one thing, and all dogs deserve a great home irregardless whether it’s pure breed or not.

    Have an awesome week!

  57. I prefer cats, but that is definitely a cute puppy. However, I bet that puppy won’t be nearly as cute in about 1.5 years.

Also, the idea of nofollow links being highlighted is rediculous. I hope this is not implemented in Firefox 2, or is at least configurable and turned off by default.

  58. Hey Matt,
Just check both bottom right links (XHTML + CSS) currently throwing validation errors πŸ˜‰
    E.X.C.E.L.L.E.N.T. BLOG as always.. !!!!

  59. Cute dog. It would be interesting to know if other mac OS X users are having problems with frequent random crashes in firefox 2.

  60. You might have noticed that Matt hasn’t posted since 25th October!

Rumors has it that Matt left to Kentucky to bring home a cute puppy from the santuary there. Question is what would Emmy and Ozzie say to that ? Very exciting weekend indeed πŸ™‚

  61. Hey, Andy, does she also want a demon?

  62. That dog’s such a dead ringer, if someone marketed it they could make a fortune πŸ™‚

  63. They look like twins.
    She heavy favors a corgi.
Good looking dog. Now you need a cat, name it IE7

  64. That’s not a dog, that’s a rat πŸ™‚

I hear such breeds can kill Rottweillers by sticking in their throat πŸ˜€

  65. Rumour I have is Matt is infact taking part in American Idol and being rivaled as a replacement for Simon Cowell.

Personally, I’d love to see Simon Cowell given a webspam handling position within big G with the right to publicly and manually ban anyone for any reason he sees fit. That’d be some entertaining stuff.

    Query results for the domain

spammyloser has been banned by Simon Cowell for the following reason:

“Quite frankly, sir, I think your usage of the noframes tag to stuff keywords is completely pathetic, and I’d like to thank you for wasting 30 seconds of the Company’s valuable time. I sincerely hope that one day you end up looking up at the tires of a moving bus.”

If you would still like to visit, feel free to type the domain name into the address bar of your web browser.

  66. Only in England, Esrun.

    I’m still around. πŸ™‚

  67. Ow, so cute the doggie! =)

And really funny the comparison with Firefox, LOL

  68. I love that name Firefox…it looks JUST like the logo πŸ˜‰

Thanks for making me smile πŸ™‚

  69. I am finding that FF 2 crashes intermittently, mainly when I have lots of tabs

  70. Matt,

    “I’m still around. :)”

But you haven’t posted for a week now. Are you taking one of your famous loooong vacations again πŸ˜‰

  71. cool puppy, and cool browser πŸ™‚

  72. Adam

May he could be in a tech version of Top Gear πŸ™‚ mm actualy that might work.

Question is who gets the Clarkson, May And Hamond Roles

Or posibly Matt could be the Stig (the Mistery Goolgle Employee whos only ever seen with the crash helment and racing overalls)

  73. Aww cute! Please dont wrap him around a globe for fear of animal rights campaigners

  74. cute dog! πŸ˜€

  75. HI Matt,

    Bad release of FF2,

my notebook simultaneously crushed with Firefox 2 release

  76. believe me or not i have shifted to FireFox 2.0 from IE6, i love Firefox and its features.

I think Microsoft should consider financing Mozilla for other products and finally Buy Mozilla!

    What do you guys think?

Thanks Matt for suggesting FireFox. Dose anyone has a replacement for MS Outlook? I am too much used to it and its heavy in loading.

  77. Ha, not a Fox. It’s a wolf pup, like Blue Duck had in Lonesome Dove. πŸ™‚

  78. Random crashes in Firefox 2 with Google Toolbar installed on MAC OSX here too, makes FF very unstable.
On MacBook Pro and desktop MAC G5.
Have had to lose the toolbar, as I could not locate the older version of FF to do a re-install. πŸ™

    Ho humm,

  79. Please please add also pics of Fluffy (another little furry Google employee). She looks like IE (or whatever that will make you put up her picture). She was in Time magazine once… in an article about Google. Currently I have over 15k pics of her, so there is plenty to choose from. Sme must look like IE at least on one of them… slow and buggy (she has fleas from time to time)… Thanks, Petra

  80. They sure look like a fox lol

  81. Firefox will freeze sometimes for me. I can not tell if it is one of the 24 extensions I installed but I don’t think so.

Did we figure out the race of that puppy yet (I want one)?

  82. Cute puppy!

Does look extremely close like a Firefox! πŸ™‚

Where can I get me one?

  83. Nice fox. πŸ˜‰
