Aha: Matt figures something out.

After SES San Jose, I caught a cold from someone. Just as I was starting to feel nearly 100%, I got sick again! “What the heck is going on?” I asked myself. I should mention I’m normally as healthy as a horse. I tend to get sick maybe once a year, and it’s usually a cold that passes quickly. So after I still felt bad (coughing and running a fever) after another week or so, I started wondering, “Have I turned into some sort of wussball? I never stay sick this long!”

I’m better than most guys about things like asking for directions when I’m lost. But I tend to soldier on when I’m sick instead of going to the doctor. My wife has had the same thing, and she’s much smarter than me. She eventually went to the doctor. So what did she find out?

The doctor said she had bronchitis! Aha, BRONCHITIS! We have BRON-FRIGGIN-CHITIS! That means I don’t have to feel like a wussball for coughing this long. 🙂 The funny thing is that I’ve talked to several people at Google who said “yeah, I got a nasty cold that knocked me flat for a few days, and I coughed for a week or two after that.” I think it was making the rounds at Google.

So I’m just going to take it easy this weekend. Lots of relaxing, fluids, sunshine, and fresh air. Wintersmith, by Terry Pratchett doesn’t come out for another month, but there’s a couple book sales around the bay area this weekend, plus the Mountain View Art & Wine Festival.

It sounds like your family doctor is a “supplementals” one 🙂

Here where i live doctors will hand you a prescription saying: ANTIBIOTICS! Otherwise that BRON-FRIGGIN-CHITIS of yours might affect your lungs if it stayed untreated 🙁

  2. Yea, gotta watch out for bugs and viruses at the google plex…specially when you envite a bunch of seo’s to party with you.

Hey Matt, you heard the new Weird Al song yet?
    http://digg.com/music/Weird_Al_Ridin_Dirty_White_Nerdy

  3. Not sure I would compare myself to being as ‘healthy as a horse’ because ill horses end up in bottles of glue, candles and soap.

  4. Since attending SES for the first time in San Jose, I have your blog as my home page and I often find myself forgeting why I got online in the first page once I read your first entry. Just wanted to say thanks.

  5. Sounds like me. Strep throat two times in August and I had not had it in 10+ years and get sick maybe once every 5 years! Crazy things going on I guess 😉

  6. yourfan

If your wife did not see the doctor, she and you will not have BRONCHITIS at all. The body will solve the problem for you and you will be ok within weeks.

  7. Well it seems that you have to clean that computer where all the dust is killing u anyways enjoy the vacation!

More fruit, vegies, rice and water needed me thinks.

You are brave! I would never tempt fate like that 🙂

Yep, it’s going around. Just make sure it doesn’t turn into laryngitis because that is REALLY frustrating, esp if you want to pod-cast.

When people suspect they have a cold they could do others a favor by buying some disinfectant and spraying their immediate vacinity. Also, using disinfectant wipes to clean areas they touch.

Ironically this would Kill off those germs before they can procreate and be hosted somewhere else – a HUMAN for example!

But, the real irony is that a few dollars worth of COMMON products – can prevent hundreds of hours in lost productivity, and a loss of quality of life.

    Go Figur’ 😕

I, too, came back from SES with bronchitis. And was unfortunate enough to have a cross-country plane ride on which I could not take cough syrup 🙁
My cough lasted for 3 weeks and a round of antibiotics. Bronchitis can be caused by bacteria or a virus, so I recommend a trip to the doc.

    Feel better!

  12. Hi, if you haven’t seen a doctor yet i think you should see one too. But if you’re looking for some alternative (more natural 🙂 ) stuff that can help i can tell you what my mum did for me:
1)raw egg yolk + honey and a few drops of lemon (all mixed into a fine paste of course 🙂 ).
    2)Boiled red wine with cinnamon
It worked for me 🙂 Hope you get better soon!

  13. In Italy we have the three “L” law:
    Latte, Letto, Lana
    that in english is:
    Milk, Bed, Wool

The best remedy? Milk, a drop of whisky and a drop of honey. It’s tested!
    bye

Then, in about 10 generations, the human race has no immune system and only last another 200 years. Some favor 🙂

  15. A good novel: ‘America’s Report Card.’ It’s by John McNally. Take care of yourself, relax and read.

    >Then, in about 10 generations, the human race has no immune system and only last another 200 years. Some favor

Mother earth might argue that such a thing wouldn’t be so awful 😀

  17. ne1home

Well, at least we can rule out SARS and Bird Flu, because you haven’t been near anyone who has travelled in S.E. Asia in the last month.

  18. do not underestimate the power of “BRONCHITIS!”… this could be a serious problem if you get older.. sometimes its just for a period or things in your environment which cause it.. but it can also be a problem for life..

    “2)Boiled red wine with cinnamon”

Last time Matt had a cold, Canadian Adam suggested him to drink boiled water. And now you suggest Matt to drink boiled red wine!

Just wondering what would be the nex boiled thing that Matt have to drink 🙂

  20. Hey, if Matt would have listened to me, he would have killed those germs and he wouldn’t have any bronchitis, nor would his wife.

That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it. 😉

  21. David

    Matt,

You have to learn to stay away from crowds. They are just germ ridden.

Oh, and don’t try any of the boiled liquid cures posted on your blog, at least not until the cool down.

Now let us see if 8 and 10 makes 18 on this here blog.

  22. Be careful with that Matt, I neglected my cough and it turned into walking pneumonia and I coughed so hard that I pulled a rib muscle, Very painful.
    Hope you feel better.
So is Google going to buy Apple?

  23. oh god, not more “cures”.

… it’s only a matter of time before somebody suggests standing in a bathtub full of gasoline smoking a cigarette or gargling broken glass..

  24. It’s your own fault, you didn’t do the boiled water thing.

  25. That’s how you get rid of inflamed tonsils, Ryan.

  26. Ben

The question is, did the people you talked to at Google have it *before* you went and coughed all over them? 😉

  27. Roses

So its not just me that managed to dinga rib coughing – some natsy interaction with my bp pills and flu – lasted 3 months.

Aint that the thruth! I don’t believe one single other species would stand in our defence either (food for thought). Well the Whales wouldn’t as they dont have legs……yet 🙂

Matt, what you need to do is make it a daily thing to walk through a highly infectious Hospital ward to toughen up your immune system. I bet you have never got a virus from Google plex. I rest my case 🙂

  29. I too have allegeric BRONCHITIS and these days I am having ayurvedic treatment for it. I think it is going better than before.

  30. bronchitis? that’s not nearly as interesting…

let us know when 1/2 the plex comes down with Mono or something…

  31. theo, I am not drinking boiling water. 🙂

  32. come on Matt.. it’d make a great video… Matt drinks boiling water.

  33. I’m down with that video idea, Ryan.

    CHUG-A-LUG! CHUG-A-LUG! CHUG-A-LUG! CHUG-A-LUG!

I wonder if Matt gives in to peer pressure of if he watched all those afterschool specials as a kid. 😀

Why do you think I want him to do it? He pulls that off, I get royalties. 😀

  38. Dave (Original)

RE: “btw i hope you guys ARE kidding”

Give it a shot and find out 🙂

  39. Sorry Harith, where do I send my royalties?

  40. Good morning Ryan

I suggest to send royalties to Emmy’s and Ozzie’s friends 😉

  41. Funny, I got bron-friggin-chitis about the same time as you did…

Doctor gave me so many different perscriptions:

antibiotics, prednizone, albuterol inhaler, cough medicine with codeine…

Took a full week, but the cough did go away…

Hmm, I got a killer cold on the airplane flying out from Portland, OR to Boston, MA. My aunt made a suggestion that I plan to heed. She says she takes “Airborne” whenever she flies or is going to be around a crowd. I will let you people educate yourselfs on what Airborne is. They got this new thing called a “search engine” for the internet that you can use. . . . .
