Travel plans for late 2007

July 2, 2007

in Google/SEO, Personal, Travel

Earlier this year I posted my rough plans for the first half of 2007. This is what the schedule is looking like for the second half:

June 4-5: SMX Seattle. Already did this (duh!), but part of the reason for this post is so that down the road I can remember what I did. :)

June 22-24: Foo Camp, also a week or so ago.

July 21-22: I’ll be speaking at WordCamp 2007 in San Francisco.

August 20-23: SES San Jose

September: there’s a wedding in early September I plan to attend.

December 4-7: I’ll be at Pubcon Vegas 2007. I plan to send other speakers from my team to SES Chicago so that we can cover both conferences.

I wanted to hit Defcon or SIGGRAPH this year (late July/early August), but I probably won’t get around to it. I’d like to attend TED at some point, and I’d definitely enjoy crashing the World Economic Forum in Davos someday. Does anyone have suggestions for other fun non-search conferences or events?

Come to Australia!

You just missed Anime Expo! http://www.anime-expo.org/ . I accidentally cruised by with my kids and it looked like fun. Or even more non-search, catch the Strawberry Music Festival for Bluegrass near Yosemite, Labor Day.

I’m thinking of attending the SMX Social Media event in NYC…

Matt, I guess WEF shouldn’t be a problem for you as G generally throws quite a nice party. I’m sure you know the right people inside G to talk to. :)

Also shortlist Oktoberfest – best thing for you ever: We do mix Sprite and beer. This way you won’t get drunk, have your favourite taste and people won’t complain that you’re not drinking. ;)

Dave (original) July 3, 2007 at 2:38 am

Careful Matt, Google might conclude they can run just fine without you :)

Elias Kai July 3, 2007 at 3:27 am

Why not coming for TIESTO the best DJ in the world : He is here in Lebanon.

Pedro July 3, 2007 at 3:29 am

Hi Matt,
Dublin is waiting for your next visit :D
…and then I would suggest you jump in Portugal for a bit, I will gladly give you a few advices ;)

Philipp Lenssen July 3, 2007 at 4:39 am

Maybe you can use Davos as a startpoint for an extended Europe tour :)

rogerd July 3, 2007 at 5:25 am

Sprite and beer? Eeeuwww….

Vanessa Fox July 3, 2007 at 5:35 am

You should come up to Seattle in early August for Gnomedex. We could go have macaroni and cheese!

Russian frend July 3, 2007 at 5:38 am

Welcome to Russia, in Sochi.

I’ll go off the board (yet again) with my suggestion. Try to see The Sustainable Condo at some point, Matt:

Events Featuring The Sustainable Condo

This thing is pretty cool to see up close. They even have a toilet that uses grey water (the water that runs off into the sink after hand-washing, dishes, showers, etc.) They were the featured exhibitor at a conference a client of mine put on last year and they did a really good job of it.

Ryan July 3, 2007 at 5:52 am

I’ve heard penguicon is usually pretty fun, and my old alma matter throws MPcon – michigan’s largest lan party.

There needs to be a search conference in the Detroit area (come on, it’s not that bad… and you DO have Google in Ann Arbor) so that I can attend.

I just can’t justify a vacation, and work can’t justify paying me to go to one.

Kevin Rogers July 3, 2007 at 5:55 am

You could try to visit emetrics this October in D.C.

netmeg July 3, 2007 at 6:42 am

I second the search conference in the Detroit area idea – I don’t know why they don’t do that, it’s not THAT bad here… (I’m in Ann Arbor)

You just missed Trekfest…it was last weekend! http://www.trekfest.com/trekfest.htm

You can always visit the future birthplace of Captain Kirk next year…He won’t be born for another ~225 years!

Sam I Am July 3, 2007 at 6:58 am

Matt, you should visit the Google team up in Trondheim, Norway, some time in the dead of winter. Can get cold, but it’s still fantastic! If you do make it up to Norway, pop me an email so I can talk face to face about getting this darn penalty removed….

If you haven’t hit up CES in Vegas – it’s a must attend for a gadget guy

Chip July 3, 2007 at 7:19 am

The SEMA auto show in Vegas is quite possibly the wildest show/conference in the US. Tough to find anything better than lightly clothed strippers and insane rides. Be prepared to walk, tho, the show is about 9 miles long in the Convention Center.

Amber July 3, 2007 at 9:35 am

I noticed iDay (June 29th) was not on the list. How is this possible, Matt? :D

Marcia July 3, 2007 at 10:22 am

>>Does anyone have suggestions for other fun non-search conferences or events?

Matt, it isn’t 100% non-search because there’s definitely SEM involved in the industry, but word has it that it’s a lot of fun. I’d seriously suggest that it would be a super idea for someone from Google to do a positive infiltration of the affiliate marketing industry at an Affiliate Summit event, not only to meet a good cross-section of the who’s who (and who isn’t) but to get an inside look at major issues and prevalant practices.

IMHO there’s a lot of unwarranted anger and unnecessary fear floating around regarding search, and there really are pro-active, vocal people trying to promote best practices, so some savvy guidance (formal or informal) could go a long way in dispelling some myths and quite frankly, helping to eliminate some of the swill that’s put out there.

There’s one this week in Miami (full up but not *really* – I’m aware of a full accommodation that was available as of last night) and one in Las Vegas at the end of February 2008.

Matt Cutts July 3, 2007 at 11:24 am

Vanessa Fox, mmmm. Macaroni and Cheese.

Ryan, I almost went to the LAN party that Maximum PC did in San Jose, but ended up not going. Probably there are lots of hard-core gamers and not as many that like to square off at Katamari. :)

graywolf, I already attend a garage cleaning conference every year or so locally. :)

Amber, I *did* attend iDay! I’ll talk about my wife’s iPhone soon.

Matt: I don’t see Norway on your list. :-( We do a lot of spamfighting here – and hope you guys at Google continue and intensify watching out for spam in foreign language countries.

Hi!

from Igor:1. Sleep a few nights on Spanish steps in Rome!

Last and only time I sit on the Spanish steps was in 1970.
In that days all the international freaks slept in a Judo-Hall
(of the 1960 Olympics near the Tiber, beside the crowded youth hostel)
and they all go to prison from time to time (by a razzia),
although that building was never used since the 60es.

Igor, do you really want things like this 4 Matt?

Greetings Karl

PS: if Matt would make it anyhow,
please tell it me early,
because I want to come looking.
