Sergey starts a blog!

I’ve checked with folks at Google and they confirmed that http://too.blogspot.com/ is Sergey Brin’s blog. The name “too” reflects Sergey’s additional life outside work. One of his first posts is about the fact that he might be more likely to develop Parkinson’s Disease when he’s older. That’s based on data from 23andMe, the personal genetics company co-founded by Sergey’s wife Anne Wojcicki. It’s a serious reminder that healthiness is one of the top issues for anyone.

I’m sure that lots of people will flood Sergey with advice like “Add Google Analytics to that blog!” or suggest how to tweak his blog template or offer him free SEO tips. Personally, I’m just glad that Sergey is blogging. I think it’s a great idea and I hope that he keeps doing it. Sergey, welcome to the blogosphere. ๐Ÿ™‚

Update: I didn’t even think to check before posting, but Sergey already has Google Analytics installed on his blog. He’s ahead of the game. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. I think it’s a great idea, much like how Mr. Gates “retired” to head up his foundation, Sergey, starting a blog and helping bring public awareness is always good in my eyes…and anyone that wants to give advice to Sergey should try making a company worth 15 billion before they dispense their own advice….

  2. Great news that Sergey joined the blogosphere, hope he could keep posting regularly.

  3. That is good news but Blue on Black? Come on my eyes are killing me now. Hope he keeps it up but maybe a friendly email suggestion to change his colours would be good. I love working with programmers but through all the years I’ve been doing it, one thing remains true. Programmers/engineers should not be allowed to design anything visual ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. I was very compelled with the subject matter considering my own medical background but found it rather difficult to read due to the dark background and light text. Odd that Sergey would choose this look, considering umm… everything.

  5. Wheew, that was tough on the eyes. I think migranes just got injected into my DNA after reading with that color scheme!

As for subject matter, pretty interesting, and a cool concept (23andMe). Although I only have 22 chromosones after getting kicked by that mule, so I’m not so sure it’s helpful to me…

  6. Matt,

After 6 Years (from the age of 40) of suffering from a Neurological Disease (cortical basal syndrome sometimes-erroneously-called Parkinson’s plus) which effects my balance, speech, swallow and emotional responses (uncontrollable laughter etc) I can say with no reservations that; “Itโ€™s a serious reminder that healthiness is one of the top issues for anyone.” is VERY true, but unfortunately not known until too late.

No matter how rich one is, money can not help with most Neurological diseases.

  7. Wondering if he actually wants his blog to be very popular – you know he can ๐Ÿ™‚ The only thing is that once he starts talking about G, he will have to hire a full time consultant, three marketing people, and five corporate lawyers to go over every word he is going to say.

  8. Matt,

“or offer him free SEO tips. ”

No free SEO tips to Sergey from me. He can for sure afford to hire one of my USA SEO friends if he wish to have better ranking on Google serps ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. I see Sergey put good use to nofollow on the foundations he’s a big supporter of? Brilliant.

  10. PPCblogger, Blogger automatically adds nofollow to links. Google for [blogger nofollow].

  11. Hmm its nice to see sergey going live on blog,, ๐Ÿ™‚ but, heโ€™ve certainly chosen difficult to read color theme ๏Œ, it hurts.. ๐Ÿ™ ,
But its okey as Sergey have clearly mentioned this is his personal blog,, may be he is writing it as his personal diary, and he loved the color combinations that actually indicates his inclination to loneliness with this blog,

And i don’t think that one of the creator of the strongest Search Engine is not aware of the simple blog optimization techniques, that can bring his blog SERPs, but he’ve used a title like ‘too’ blog post name so … and other things too this again (i thought he is doing some experiment on his own,, bloogin like a novice,, as i did few years back. ๐Ÿ˜€ )..

Well anyways nice to see Sergey blogging.. ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. hmm blue and black not quite as bad as the golfing site that used red on green text – and of course older males (who are more likly play golf) are those more likley to have red/green color blindness.

  13. Arrr! This deserves a sip o’ grog and a toot on me ‘ol hornpipe!

  14. Matt,

Btw, its Talk Like a Pirate Day. The same thing like last year ? ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. Sergey should know that he should host his blog on his own domain instead of blogspot…wait…blogspot is his domain :.)

  16. Hey I blog too, any way I can get a link juice prop too?? ๐Ÿ™‚

Plus, since I am a lawyer, I already developed brain damage and “epoxy glue to my ass and chair disease.”

  17. I am surprised he posted about the Parkinsons thing, because that is the precise issue why a lot of people discourage the use of genetic services such as 23 and me – for many people they are just going to create a lifetime of concern about diseases like Parkinsons or Alzheimers that may never even effect their life or be preventable.

Were all gonna die and we all have our issues – just live and roll with the punches.

  18. Nick – I think the original Nick here, maybe Sergey wanted to go with a color scheme far away from Google’s colors to make it clear that it was a personal blog. That’s the beauty of a blog–you get to choose what it looks like! ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. Uh oh… is this a sign that Google is falling behind? He should be micro-blogging to stay ahead of the curve. ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. > PPCblogger, Blogger automatically adds nofollow to
    > links. Google for [blogger nofollow].

I just created a new blog at Blogger without adjusting the settings to test this but the outgoing link was normal, followed. Is there a context in which the default settings nofollow outgoing links?

  21. Matt,

“Sergey already has Google Analytics installed on his blog. Heโ€™s ahead of the game. ”

Sergey might be a web traffic tracking and analyzing freak, but he is no SEO for sure ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. Hey Matts,

You are quite right, health is the real wealth for everyone. But I think Sergey has achieved much in his young age. He can easily take care of his health now. He is a real gentleman

  23. Do you think Sergey will agree to participate in some 3 way link exchange? ๐Ÿ™‚
Good luck Sergey, welcome to the internet ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. I started a new blog on blogger about a month ago and it didn’t?.

What a bad idea that would be as default. Great way to screw up the hyperlink structure of the internet.

  25. I’m sure that Sergey needs some SEO tips.

  26. I would actually love for him to publish some of the emails he gets. I’m pretty sure he gets people emailing him and offering him guaranteed rankings in Google for a certain amount of money.

  27. Interesting, also I don’t understand why his first topic is just his mother’s illness.

  28. Sergey needs SEO help, like Tiger needs golf tips. :p

  29. Hi Matt,

Great to see that Sergey is blogging! I sincerely hope it goes beyond being PR for his wife’s company in future posts. ๐Ÿ™‚

I second the motion that I hope he shares his opinions on some issues at Google and elsewhere on the Internet.

My first question? When will the artificial boundary between news and blogs be removed/changed/modified? Please see my 2007 on this subject for more detail.

  30. I was about to just make a post to give support in light of what he’s come to discover, but look at the Captcha I got when I was about to make that post;

    http://www.directorydump.com/tmpimages/sergey-brin-post.jpg

I near dropped out of my chair. This is NOT an edit of any sort. How uncanny!

    ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

    Rob.

  31. Hi Matt –

Perhaps remind him that it’ll be more enlightenting if he turns on some comments. That second post of his was a poignant reminder of how the online world creates a new kind of social intimacy between strangers.

  32. Hi Matt,

Why Sergey is not allowing any comments on his blog ?

    It’s a blog or a “monog” ?

    Regards

    Manuel

  33. I had and idea….
I explain this on this “crazy” blog
    http://zhre.blogspot.com

As the 10tothe100 project is focused on help people, i had and idea of “sequential blogs” starting from “too” to promote needs of help in differents areas. This could be a crazy nice blogging sequential revolution…i made my own on zhre. Hope to be useful for someone…
    regards

  34. Just imagine how much money he could make if he added Adsense to his blog ๐Ÿ™‚

  35. I guess this is a little different than google-friends and egroups, eh?

Google Analytics is a waste of time imho for a blogger, unless you have a huge site, and you know what website analytics actually is. I suggest clicky or hittail for bloggers.

  36. Sergey in drag, hot or not?

  37. @chris:
because it’s a blog. Sheesh. He can darn well write anything he wants!

  38. Sergey has updated his blog… (party)
His latest (and only) update so far, turned out to be a parturition / I wonder if his next post will take another 9 months? Anyways–he had a good reason to jot something down.
