My PubCon 2007 schedule

Next week, I’ll be at PubCon in Vegas. Here’s how to find me.

– I get into town Tuesday afternoon. I’ll be on a 7 p.m. panel Tuesday night with other search engine reps from Yahoo!, Live, and Ask. Guy Kawasaki will be moderating.
– On Wednesday, I’ll be sitting in on sessions during the day. Google is hosting a Meet the Google Engineers reception from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. After that, I’m planning to head over to the Werewolf tournament to watch how well SEOs play that game. πŸ™‚
– On Thursday morning, I’ll be doing a keynote question and answer session with Brett Tabke.
– On Friday, I’ll be hanging out for hours at the PubCon. My plane flies back Friday evening.

If you’re at PubCon, please walk up and introduce yourself — I’d love to meet you. πŸ™‚

  1. I have been to many search conferences and wanted to say hi but you are always surrounded by 5-10 people at all times. Perhaps this time I get to say hi.

  2. Dave Dugdale, just plow on in and say hello. πŸ™‚

  3. Matt,
If you have not already discovered the Carnegie Deli at the Mirage in Las Vegas, check it out. I ordered the “Woody Allen”, a gigabite of Pastrami & Swiss. The waitress warned me it was alot of sandwich, which I replied ” I’m alot of man!. (weighing 250lbs). She challenged me to finish HALF of the sandwich!
The sandwich arrived a large mound of meat that sparked a chant from the waiting customer line (behind our seats) of Go..Go..Go.! As my wife gave me the death stare I began cramming down this “beast” like a fraternity boy in a beer guzzling contest. I alternated dipping the cured meat in spicy mustard and sipping iced tea. I think I swallowed the lemon whole, rind and all. As the waitress kept one eye on me and the other on her tips, I kept a straight face from the task I faced. As the crowd cheered on, I DID finish HALF the sandwich much to the ire of the waitress.
I exited the Deli and proceeded to the craps table in a glorious state. After sipping on my complimentary Sam Adams, and leaning on the Pit Boss, the “volcano” began to churn. Never in all my years of gambling did I want someone to “Crap” out. I briskly manuevered through the brightly lit slots and maize of elevators back to my room. Once in my room, well.. Lets just say what happens in Vegas.. Stays in Vegas.
After brushing my teeth and sprucing up, I proceeded back to the scene of the crime.. with all this “free space” now, it would only be natural to “download” a super size wedge of that NY style cheesecake they (the Deli) display in their glass case. Upon my arrival, I caught the eye of the irked waitress, who smiled and winked, and jestered by putting her finger down her throat! How can you pass up that hospitality!
Let us know when you will be coming to Ann Arbor (UofM) for any events, lectures, etc.. Go Blue!

  4. +1 on the plow on in. Just make sure you have a Sprite in hand. Worked for me πŸ˜€

  5. Yes, Oh SearchEnginesWeB WILL be there…

Bring appropriate expensive gifts of worship to humbly present to SearchEnginesWeB and to lay at SearchEnginesWeB’s feet.

    hmmmm…
Perhaps, all of Google could chip in to show their appreciation for all that Oh SearchEnginesWeB has done for them. 😐

  6. Bill Brandon, no frickin way am I going to the Carnegie Deli in Vegas. I hit the Carnegie Deli in New York for an SES one time. The sandwich was delicious and huge, but the bacon was so crispy that I chipped a tooth on the sandwich.

No more Carnegie Deli for me. πŸ™‚

  7. I still can’t decide if I’m going or not. Las Vegas twice in one month is way too much WT for me. I think it’s going to be a game time decision for me, unless the Palms wants me to tear up their basketball court πŸ˜‰

Or I could put this month’s AdSense check down on Red!

    Chip-

  8. hey, is someone taking videos of the conference? I can`t make it this time and would love to see some panels covered. Regards, Jab

  9. Matt,

Are you going to blogging during PubCon, or are you going to leave me and MWA under the mercy of SEW πŸ™‚

  10. Jab, one nice thing is that the conferences are covered by quite a few people these days. So you might miss an exact turn of phrase somewhere, but you should be able to get a pretty good overall feel for the important sessions.

Harith, if I do blog, it will probably be a cat post or something similar. I prefer to suck the marrow during the conference, and then blog about sucking the marrow a few days later. πŸ™‚

  11. Matt,

This is going to be so much fun! It may be my imagination, or are there going to be a lot more parties and get together that are open to everyone this time compared to Pubcons in the past? It seems much more democratic this way.

    Bill Brandon,
That was just plain ridiculous! and hilarious!

    Search Engines Web,
Please find me at the Poker Tournament on Thursday and say hello, and let me know who you are. I am so curious to see the offline person that goes with your comments.

and Matt if you don’t mind me dropping a advertisement for the charity poker tournament, if any of you have not heard about it, just click on my name and you can read about it. Unfortunately, Matt has not signed up, but a few other people have. You are all very welcome to attend. (Matt please feel free to edit or remove the last paragraph of my comment if you like.)

There is also a party on Thursday right after the last session at the Renaissance hotel bar hosted by Andy Beal,

  12. I meant the second to the last, the one about my tournament, not the one about Andy’s party!

  13. Is there anyone that is going to blog live from pubcon? It would be really interesting to follow. Matt! you should set up a live video feed directly to this blog πŸ™‚ Perhaps a little bit to much to ask πŸ˜‰ Well, keep us updated. Thanks πŸ™‚

  14. I’m so jealous. There’s not such SEO Party in here. Matt, When are you coming to Australia?

  15. MATT….I need your help….any chance you can email me? Please.

  16. Matt,

I’ll make another effort to meet you at PubCon if you’ll talk them into having it on the East Coast again. Only saw you from afar at Boston in 2006.

BTW, you had a recent post about search engines not wanting to pass on paid link juice, which is good, but what do you make of the recent claims on Webmaster World that Adwords text and links are now getting indexed?

  17. Be careful when chatting to Matt. Odd things can happen.

I never did find out where my shoelaces went…

  18. Hey Matt! Sadly, I won’t be able to make it to pubcon. I was really hoping to meet you there. Is there any way to reach out to you online and try to cultivate a relationship, other than through these comment boards? I tried friending you on MySpace but it looks like you haven’t been there in months. What’s a young enterprising SEO guy to do?

  19. g1smd

Taking the chance, I was able to get to chat to Matt for a few minutes, and then after, as I walked away, I thought “must tie that shoelace now”…

I looked down, and it had completely gone. Zip. Zero. Nada. Gone. Jedi mind trick? Sleight of hand?

    Maybe we’ll never know….

Did Matt has his cat Emmy with him when you met him? Because she is an expert in “unplugging” things.

She even unplugged Matt once. Here what Matt wrote:

“My cat Emmy unplugged a power strip. She does stuff like this.” πŸ™‚

  20. Matt, I hope you have a great time. WIsh I was going to this one if for no other reason than to shake your hand!

I found something important for our mystery surround my website and its indexed pages. We started logging the googlebot’s visits to the thread discussions to see if they were indeed getting there. They are. THEY ARE!! As of Dec 1, over 25,000 threads have been spidered by the googlebot and the bot is still there, spidering more even as I type this …..(I can show you the log if it would help you?)

So this means the bots get to the content but google index is only showing 13K of them. ……This leads me to wonder again, am I being penalized for something or limited in number of pages shown for some reason?? Isn’t this exciting news??! Now can you figure out on your end why that content isn’t showing up in SERP?

Have a great time in Vegas. And remember, what happens in Vegas belongs on your blog!

  21. This is an issue that needs to be addressed:

    http://www.google.com/search?num=100&q=site%3Ahystersisters.com++-inurl%3Awww

    http://www.google.com/search?num=100&q=site%3Awww.hystersisters.com

You have two identical websites competing with each other in the SERPs.

Internally you also link back to:
    – /vb2/
    – /vb2/index.php
    – /vb2/index.php?s=some.session.id&
and maybe other duplicate URLs for the forum index page.

The forum index page can be got to as
    http://hystersisters.com/vb2
    http://hystersisters.com/vb2/
    http://www.hystersisters.com/vb2
    http://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/
as well as the above. The missing trailing slash is also an issue.

You correctly have a 301 redirect from non-www to www on the root URL at http://hystersisters.com/ but not anywhere in the forum folder.

That’s all I spotted in a quick look. There are likely other such issues elsewhere within the site.

  22. Forum threads can still have multiple URLs in the index. For example:

    /vb2/showthread.php?t=205265

can also be accessed at least as:

    /vb2/showthread.php?t=205265&page=1&pp=10
    /vb2/archive/index.php/t-205265.html
    /vb2/showpost.php?p=1345501
    /vb2/showpost.php?p=1345501&postcount=1

too. There may be others. I didn’t look any further.

This applies to all the threads in the forum.

I wrote about Duplicate Content issues such as this over at WebmasterWorld some two or three years ago.

It seems that designers of forum, cart, blog, and CMS software solutions are NOT listening.

  23. Even if the duplicate content is not submitted in the sitemap? I thought google would index what is submitted in the sitemap and blocked with robots.txt (which I have). I know that visitors can access pages from different urls, but I’ve gone above and beyond to block bots and submit sitemap without duplicate content.

  24. The Sitemaps feature helps Google and other search engines find your content, but indexing is not limited purely to URLs within that file. Search engines will take any URL they can find and index them and their content.

Your robots.txt file eliminates a lot of problems, but I have pointed you to a few more issues that need to be addressed. In particular the www and non-www issue and the multiple index page problems need addressing.

  25. See ya there, Matt! Safe travels!

  26. Thank you. I’ll take care of that right away.

  27. No problem.

  28. Taking the chance, I was able to get to chat to Matt for a few minutes, and then after, as I walked away, I thought β€œmust tie that shoelace now”…

I looked down, and it had completely gone. Zip. Zero. Nada. Gone. Jedi mind trick? Sleight of hand?

    Maybe we’ll never know….

  29. Matt –

I will be attending PubCon. In fact I’m already in Vegas. I look forward to meeting you!

  30. There needs to be a south east seo meeting like pubcon for those of us that have young kids and can’t get away to Vegas. Maybe someone could tape the best stuff and sell it for $25 – a lot of people would buy it.

  31. Matt,

I am flying into Vegas on Thursday and would love to join in the happenings. Where are you planning to be Thursday night?

    Kind Regards,

Neways if you have some plan of it do put some light on it….

    Thank you

  33. Matt was AWESOME on the panel with Guy Kawasaki last night, I captured a bunch of notes on my http://www.Twitter.com/jayberkowitz and blog http://tengoldenrulesblog.blogspot.com/2007/12/amazing-panel-at-pubcon-2007-moderated.html

  34. Perhaps you can arrange your schedule also in the Phil. ?

  35. It may be a bit too much to ask, but when can you guys get to Australia? Us search engine optimizers down here are always learning from you all long distance. It’s effective, but not as fun as a PubCon. Pubs are aplenty down here so whenever you can make it, you’re more than welcome!

  36. Would love to have you here in Sydney.

  37. Yeah, would love to see him in Australia… I doubt its happening anytime soon…

  38. How about Melbourne anytime soon?
