My 2007 traffic stats

Time to post my stats from 2007. I did a similar stats post last year. In 2006, I had 1.7M visits and about 2.9M pageviews. In 2007, I had about 2.3M visits and 4.8M pageviews:

My search stats for 2007

My top five posts in terms of traffic were:

My RSS subscriber stats look like this:

Subscriber stats

What else can I easily check as far as stats? I’ve done 580 posts since I started my blog with 38,990 comments, or about 67 comments per post, on average. Oh, and my browser breakdown in 2007 was 48% Firefox and 44% Internet Explorer.

  1. Hi Matt,
Did you use a Google Analytics plugin for wordpress to install the script, or did you come up with another solution?

    Thanks,
    Jason

  2. Dave (original)

Great numbers Matt and not one black hat trick or paid link used. Just goes to show cheating is not needed and the “sandbox” , “aging delay” etc is a SEO myth πŸ™‚

In fact, the whole concept of SEO is a myth and content is still King πŸ™‚

  3. Dave (original)

In 2007, I had about 2.3M visits and 4.8M pageviews

Here is another white hatters statistics for 2007.

Unique Views =3716140 *Exact value not available in ‘Year’ view

    Number of visits = 7066895 (1.9 visits/visitor)

    Pages = 22279526 (3.15 Pages/Visit)

    Hits = 124715927 (17.64 Hits/Visit)

  4. How do you get your yearly statistics from Analytics? I’ve only been using it for about 6 months and haven’t figured out how to get traffic details over a date range. Probably because there’s so much info in there it overwhelms me.

  5. Would it be possible to share more detailed information? πŸ™‚

β–Ά What were the 50 most popular keywords?

β–Ά What were the search engines traffic breakdown?

β–Ά What percentage of traffic comes from blogs/forums linking to popular posts?

β–Ά What were the top social site referrers breakdown?

β–Ά What were the geographic breakdowns?

β–Ά What effect does being in the Technorati Top 100 have on traffic?

What direction is this blog headed for 2008?

  6. Matt,
Regarding the 1.5 million visitors in the visitors overview, is that 1.5 million different people? or how is that related to the 2.3 million visits?

I think at least half of those visits were Harith, Original Dave, SEW and myself. – R.O.F.

I think your blog just went Platinum. Congratulations on being so admired and well read!

    dk

  7. I suffer from great amounts of envy when you post stats like that. Compared to my 100 or so a day. Little acorns…

Anyway thanks for all the great info, also I am running a Matt Cutts Google Videos all this week on my blog – great stuff on Google Video, thanks.

  8. I find it strange how more and more people use Google programs. For example, I use Google Stats, Reader, Gmail, Adsense and Search because they are all connected. Which is an obvious ‘duh’, but it only started out with my Gmail and spread from there. The only let down is the that there isn’t a smooth connection through out all the programs.

I’m curious which type of search engines point to you (other then Google) and what exactly is the other in the Traffic?

  9. In behalf of 31.373 subscribers:
“Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.”

  10. 48% firefox 😎

out of interest, what was the big spike in the middle?

  11. Congrats Matt, they are so many webmaster who like your revelations, perhaps they are scary of algorithm modifications you could treat.
For Dave (The Other One) : use calendar on your Analytics’s dashboard.

  12. Hey Matt,

Great Stats, just so you know, i’m in the 55% Google Feedfetcher Stats
    πŸ™‚

    Shahid

  13. As usual you’re making me feel inadequate…congrats on the numbers. Very impressive!

  14. Quite pleasently suprised by the 48% firefox.
Gz on a sick ammount of pageviews πŸ˜‰

  15. It seems to be coming more common these days for the bigger blogs and community sites to share their stats. If the small to medium size ones were to share theirs I am sue that would be just as interesting.

  16. Time to add AdSense.

    Probably not allowed πŸ™

  17. I’m curious if you would share your top few search terms for the year with this. It was quite interested when Jeremy Shoemaker shared this and a Britney Spears term popped in.

  18. Firefox beating out IE is very pleasant to see, even if it is a more webmaster savvy group reading your blog than on most sites and thus they have actually no reason whatsoever to be using IE to start with – what you 44% doing with IE??!!

Do you have stats on FF in 2006; I couldn’t find them in last years post and it’d be interesting to see their growth. We run a much more broad target site and are seeing 25-30% on FF which is beautiful!!! One day I might not even have to spend as much time hacking CSS for windows as I do writing the entire stylesheet for other browsers; ah, that’ll be a beautiful day indeed πŸ˜‰

  19. Matt,
Have you considered sticking some Google ads on the site? The money could be donated to charities.

    Paul

  20. Hey great stats Matt, how much for a link?

    – joking πŸ˜‰

  21. Nice stat, Matt !

Stable, a lot of people come here. Good for you ? What is that big “pic” ? πŸ™‚

  22. If only they could have known how popular you are back in high school. Impressive stats!

  23. I am really surprised on your #1 post. Any guess why?

  24. Matt, you never did post your thoughts on the Everex. Is that still on the to-do list?

  25. Very impressive stats. I hope I will reach that someday.

  26. Omar Yesid MariΓ±o

I know you are a Google employee and maybe it is not allowed for you… but if you monetized this website, I think that your incomes will would explode!

  27. @Dave Dugdale: because it was about something other than SEO wonkery, so it attracted normal people. The audience for most of Matt’s posts reminds me of The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade,

  28. Gimme another year Matt…I’ll catch up yet…
    hehehe πŸ˜€

  29. Impressive stats, Matt. Beyond what I will achieve for sure.

Just out of curiosity, what is the average time on site?

    Thanks for sharing.

  30. Very interesting stats!

  31. omar

I dont think Matt has to wory about money πŸ™‚

Interesting that you got the most on the everex computer i would have guesed one of the paidlinks ones.

dave (yearly stas) just click on the arow to the left of the displayed date range you then get a date range selection widget drop down and you can enter a range or compare ranges

  32. All the great content on here, and the top 2 are an unboxing and the iPhone jailbreak.

    Hi-larious.

  33. Todd, given that it’s my #1 post, it’s back on my to-do list now. πŸ˜‰

Running into work for a meeting, but I’ll try to stop back by and answer more questions later today.

  34. Keeps getting better. Good work Matt!

  35. Matt –

Great post – I do wonder if you could share your throughs on the visitor / pageview ratio though.

I have been in the small-time development world for about 15 years, specializing in ecom and most currently, blogging about niche markets etc. During these years, I have learned quite a bit about SEO as well… just a product of the beast! πŸ™‚

It has always been a goal of mine and thus my customers, to strive for pageviews in the 2-5 range for ecommerce (find, click, buy) and higher ranges for information type sites, like this.

What is your thought on the 2.09 pages per visit metric? Do you find that unique visitors browse deeper versus repeat visitors?

    Thanks again, great reading!

    Mark

  36. You get as many visitors in 2 average days as I got all last year! We both made the same ad revenue though. Big respect for providing such an amusing website without monetizing it.

  37. Dave (The Other One), sign into Analytics and click on the domain to manage. On that first page will be a calendar widget in the top right corner. Clicking on that will let you choose a date range.

  38. “I’m curious which type of search engines point to you (other then Google) and what exactly is the other in the Traffic?”

Boring Market, as a blogger who talks about Google issues I might be a little weird. I got more traffic from StumbleUpon than Yahoo, and more traffic from Bloglines than MSN. I’ve never submitted one of my stories to StumbleUpon, either.

  39. Colin, the big spike in the middle of the year was the “5 things you don’t know about Google Search” post. Looks like it got 1000+ diggs.

  40. Daniel and Paul, I go back and forth about whether to do any AdSense and donate the money to charity. Right now I’ve got enough on my plate, but it would be helpful to experience that side of things so I can relate more with AdSense publishers.

  41. That’s not all that weird, Matt. StumbleUpon has a tendency, based on the random way in which it sends users to sites, to generate high-volume short-term spikes in traffic. The first time I came across it, it was due to a site that saw 1000 referrals from it in 14 hours.

The question is, and I don’t know how you’d measure this…do SU referrals become regular readers and posters?

  42. “Do you have stats on FF in 2006; I couldn’t find them in last years post and it’d be interesting to see their growth.”

Sam I Am, I just went to check and amazingly enough, in 2006 my stats were also 48% FF and 44% IE. In 2005 it was 46% FF and 46% IE. Just goes to show that the readers here are ahead of the curve. πŸ™‚

  43. Ok I am so puzzle if earlier comments calling SEO a myth was for real!!!

Matt is getting these traffics because so many people are linking to him . He many not be doing my SEO himself but he does not need to he is a rock star in the SEO world.

By the way happy new year Matt. I am a recent fan of yours.

    Al

  44. Chris Bartow, some of my top terms included

    matt cutts blog
    seo blog
    blog
    noodp
    proxy
    iphone user agent
    linkbait

  45. Jon Henshaw, then they all would have been sorry. πŸ˜‰

  46. Dave Dugdale, there’s a lot of power in social media and/or people who are bored on the web and just searching around for fun things.

M.W.A., there’s probably a way to cookie SU users and see whether they become more loyal. But I am lazy, and that sounds like work. πŸ™‚

  47. “Oh, and my browser breakdown in 2007 was 48% Firefox and 44% Internet Explorer.”

“Sam I Am, I just went to check and amazingly enough, in 2006 my stats were also 48% FF and 44% IE. In 2005 it was 46% FF and 46% IE. Just goes to show that the readers here are ahead of the curve. ”

    You wish! lol

Juts a different type of person that uses firefox. Firefox is racing to get as insecure as internet explorer, isn’t it? πŸ™‚

  48. Matt,

Donating adsense income to charity is a great idea! You might also want to consider setting up some sort of contests on your blog every now and then, and use a portion of the adsense money to buy Everex PC’s as prizes πŸ™‚ Just make sure you don’t fall into the category of buying links, that is all.

More importantly, it will be an insider test of spamming ads that may pop up in adsense. So it is good for all.

  49. Matt – great stats, I really enjoy your site! What were your stats before you worked for google?

To Dave (original) the very first commenter – you are correct that content is king! I just posted a discussion that I had with some top bloggers on my site and all of them stated that they spend 0% of their time on SEO.

  50. Matt, have you seen what the uber seo said about you? Do you really owe all your traffic to them?

I found it on sphinn but look at their clients page > http://sphinn.com/story/22437

  51. Accessing yearly stats is part of the benefits package that Google offers to its employees. Most people are lured by the ability to access the yearly stats than the dental plan and other similar earthy benefits πŸ™‚

More seriously, it is good to see that Firefox is leading. I am curious about the OS breakdown (mainly Windows versus Linux). Tech web sites have the reputation to attract more Unix/Linux users. I wonder if this is true for your web site.

I was also surprised to see that the Everex article was the most popular in 2007, it was not even an article, but just an appetizer for a long-awaited article.

    Keep up the good work.

  52. I do hope you understand that the traffic is due to the fact that Google through you is using this blog to give information.

Hence that I and under web masters is forced to read to get information. I probably loads of other people would more than happy to be able not to read it. And instead have one page at Google giving the information instead of the guidlines, this blogs, webmaster blog and five other (as I read).

It is really easy to set up adsense. πŸ™‚

    Couldn’t resit…

On a serious note, the biggest challenge would be picking the charity, at least the way i see it.
    Paul

  54. well congratulations! these are some really impressive numbers.

  55. Wow! Those are some really nice stats. I like the graphs you put down, too. I’m a big fan of graphs as they help me visualize what a author is talking about.
I’m hoping to someday get some traffic like that to my blog at http://melbelshebel.blogspot.com, but I’ve got a way to go. Right now I’m working on the content, which is starting to look really good. I’m not quite sure what I’m aiming for genre-wise. I read this blog a lot (silent-type) and this is the first I’ve commented. I just wanted to say congrats. I use a lot of your ideas, I hope you don’t mind, but it’s helping me a lot. Thanks!

  56. Congratulations! this is really good stats report.

Matt is getting these traffics because so many people are linking to him . He many not be doing my SEO himself but he does not need to he is a rock star in the SEO world.

It was “for real” alright. It only took me about 1 year of being online to fathom out that SEs like Google and people using them, want quality content pages as apposed to pages designed for SEs.

Knowing your subject/topic/customers/readers is far more important than any “SEO”ing, IMO.

  58. Hey Matt, I’d be very interested to see what your blog metrics look like πŸ™‚

  59. Out of interest Matt what’s the geographic breakdown of your readers?

  60. Surprised about your stats. Congrats!

  61. Come Onnnnnnnnnnnn man,

    That’s some awesome traffic.

I remember your post a few months back on the Alexa thing where you showed I think it was professor Novack’s AI site having many more visitors then your site and still no Alexa Rank.

What’s the secret there to all this traffic.

Next year I wanna have 2 Mill visitors too.

    πŸ™‚

  62. Wow…..great job.

Even more impressive is the increase for 06 to 07….that took a lot of time and effort to get the continued exposure! and a lot of sitting in that chair of yours with the cat!

Any chance of a backlink from your main blog page!? haha

    all the best Matt!

  63. That’s an aweful lot amount traffic for a websites. But I wonder how I r make mine as populars.

  64. Hello Matt
Your blog is amazing. I read your post daily. I am thankful you share your knowledge with all the world.

    Thanks
    Azhar

  65. So if you had 39k comments, how much spam did Akismet catch?

  66. Congrats on the nice traffic increase over 2006. Keep up the great work on this blog. Very informative.

  67. Thats pretty impressive growth. Its funny to see how much the feed subscribers fall every sunday.

  68. Moin Matt,

wow, that are really some nice stats. Although it hardly to notice, but now you have one reader more πŸ™‚

    Greetings from Germany

    Kalle

  69. @Enaty , thanks for the tip. I never noticed the little calendar widget in the Analytics main page.

  70. Hey Matt Congrats, you have done great!! . I wish you will get triple time visitors than 2007 in year 2008. Best of luck πŸ™‚

  71. That is some amount of traffic. So with that much traffic do you need to use a dedicated server?

  72. Hey, looks like you are getting close to the 5 Mio.
You know what that means… AdWords Campaign.
    πŸ™‚

    You are the man.

  73. Hi Matt, I’m not sure if you re-visited this issue recently and I missed it, but what are your full thoughts on the Adsense question?

With stats like that, adsense on the left hand side would be fine with everyone as long as they knew the money was going to charity. Then again, we are all in the business of making money to have a nice life, so you could not be completely shamed if you decided to add adsense for the sake of making a nice income from the blog in this way…..

If you do add adsense to the site, and you tell us the money is going to charity, I would definately click on them and view their sites. Does this whole thought process though go against the terms of use for adsense, and does it serve the advertisers poorly by doing this if you know your users will just randomly click on ads to help charity? Im curious to know your exact opinions on this whole issue regarding your blog and adsense.

Perhaps you have already added a post about this, if so , please post link…I would be interested to read it.

    Cheers mate

  74. Hi Matt

Great Stats……keep up the good work……I’ve found so much useful information on your blog

  75. You have got some real excellent results there matt, well done. Its great how you have created such a large community which visitors refer back to time & time again.

Keep up the good work matt =)

  76. Hi Matt,
A suggestion. I see you’re using Feedburner but you don’t have Email subscriptions activated. I recommend you to activate it and put a subcribe box under that RSS and you’ll see the number of subscribers increasing considerably (I guess not everyone likes using rss readers). I did this on http://www.dopdf.com and the new subscribers’ rate doubled (though they’re not in the xx xxx area as yours).

  77. Fantastic stats, if i got a quarter of that traffic i would be a happy man! Great to see firefox ahead in the browser battle, its way better than IE.

  78. I am wondering why you don’t use AdSense. I understand that you work for Google but you can always donate this money to charity.

  79. Hi!

    some times I am blind
now I find the link above

    and there was the Geomap/GeoLocation
very interesting for You and us!
can you please show it up for 2007?

    Greetings Karl

  80. ummmm….

    hey Matt dude, ahhh…

    OH MY GODDDDD.

That is complete 100% total insane stats man. Whoa.

Seriously that is amazing. I have worked on 10-100 sites at a time as a designer, developer, marketer, seo and webmaster. Yet I don’t think even if I added every single person I have worked for in all the things I do and every site I’ve touch it would hold a candle to you.

The scary thing is I know that is almost all quality traffic to.

I get lost just keeping up with the traffic for my friends and clients. Can’t even imagine going over those stats logs. YAY for GOOGLE ANALYTICS πŸ™‚

You just made me a double convert on this one bro.

    WOW

    thats really cool man.

    Peace as always my friend

    Mich D.

  81. Dave (original)

Yet I don’t think even if I added every single person I have worked for in all the things I do and every site I’ve touch it would hold a candle to you.

That’s because SEO/SEM is a myth as I stated above.

BTW, I would put that statement on your resume` πŸ™‚

  82. Mr Cutts! We’ve had a few people now looking for your opinion on Adsense and the possiblity of you adding them to your blog!

With your almighty statistics, you could probably feed the entire third world with some Adsense on here!

  83. wow, that’s a nice number. I wonder when I will get those figures.. or even just half of those figures. πŸ™‚

  84. Wow Matt,

Have you installed the new GA.js code…

Please share us some insights into the advantages of using it…

I just have a small question, would be glad if you answer it…

How much traffic do you get from Stumbleupon.com

  85. Matt,

    what a big traffic, congratulation.

  86. That’s interesting! Especially the peaks. 10.000 Visitors and then 40.000 visitors a day. What were the special events on these days?

And only 2.09 pages per visit. Seems that users come regularly and only check the news.

37% search engine traffic. That’s alot. The machines are going to surf more then the people themselves!

30,000 Feed Subscribers. That is incredible!

  87. Interesting statistics, how do you measure conversion to actual sales or sales leads?

  88. Oh Weakly I envy you properly so much in Traffic I also want to have, am not, unfortunately, such a pro like you?

  89. Really impressive stats. You can see people really want to learn.

  90. Hi matt, on 2007, looks pretty nice, but about the year 2009 and 2010, do you have any stats, because i hope on the last years, peoples are more interested on search engine optimization, hope more visitors than in 2007.

btw i wish you all the best!
