in Games

North Carolina got knocked out of the 2007 NCAA basketball tournament by Georgetown today. The Hoyas played well, so I don’t begrudge them the win.

My usual litmus test for a good tournament is “Did one of my teams make it to the Final Four?” Kentucky got knocked out in the second round, but Kansas had a good team this year. And UNC almost made it to the Final Four but came up short in overtime today. Normally those two losses would count as a bad year in my book.

But Duke lost in the first round. To Virginia Commonwealth. And that tips it over to a good year for me. :)

You win some.you lose some:)

Chuck March 26, 2007 at 1:35 am

Sorry, dude. I was really hoping that my Buckeyes would get a chance to avenge the loss to North Carolina earlier in the season now that Greg Oden is nearing full strength with his wrist. And what better stage for the rematch than in the Final Four?

Ah well….a lot of these games have been good!

Better luck next year! ;-)

Carolina gave it away (argh). Settling for jump shots in the last five minutes, all I could do is watch in horror as they caved. Who knows, maybe some of the freshman will stick around – on to ‘08!

Kelly March 26, 2007 at 4:25 am

Vanderbilt AND Tennessee made it known that they came to play. This makes for a very good tournament for most of us in Tennessee. (Duke losing was not a bad thing either)

I cant wait for Rutgers Football season, our Mens Basketball team has not been a contender in decades

At least you’ve had a good year…

Not me…

Mike March 26, 2007 at 6:03 am

Kentucky’s gonna be back soon with a new coach to come … but VCU is my new favorite team … along with everybody else that beat those Aminu-stompers !

esoomllub March 26, 2007 at 6:06 am

As a VCU alum… the win over Duke made it a GREAT year for me, despite my bracket looking like a piece of crud.

Eric March 26, 2007 at 6:22 am

Ugh. What a punch in the stomach…

Hopefully Lawson and Wright stay in school and we make another run next year.

Seth Aldridge March 26, 2007 at 6:38 am

Matt,

Feel free to come work for the Google their building in NC! We’d love to have you in the area…but make sure you bring plenty of sun screen to protect the back of your neck!

Dan March 26, 2007 at 7:06 am

Bummer. I was rooting for them as well. There’s always, erm, next year, kiddo….

Davak March 26, 2007 at 8:35 am

Wearing our Carolina Blue, a bunch of us watched the game yesterday with some excellent adult beverages. The EtOH premedication helped us all handle the pain. The team are all just a bunch of good kids; I think we all knew that this wasn’t a final-four kinda year.

Now the question will be if Psych-T heads for the NBA or not.

Language not safe for work… but this is one of the most funny anti-Duke videos I have ever seen. The tunes just sticks in your head:

Of course Kansas has a good team, they invented the game!

You know Matt, it wouldn’t kill you to root for a Cali team since you are now a California native. Don’t let the whole So Cal/Nor Cal thing get to you. UCLA is still in it and is out for revenge against Florida.

Matt Cutts March 26, 2007 at 11:42 am

Seth Aldridge, NC is a great place — as long as you have air conditioning. :) I still miss the sweet tea..

Liam Hegarty March 26, 2007 at 12:14 pm

Go Hoyas! Go!

Gmoney March 26, 2007 at 12:53 pm

NC is taking it home next year.

Multi-Worded Adam March 26, 2007 at 1:31 pm

Bill: if you read closely, you’ll see that a Canadian invented the game. Anyone who has lived here long enough has seen the uber-annoying Heritage Foundation vignettemercial on TV.

Monjurul March 26, 2007 at 2:08 pm

Tyler’s not going pro next year, at least that’s what some of his very close friends have told me. It sucks that Wright will be going though, meaning our best chance for the NCAA was probably this year. =/

There’s always hope with UNC though, we tend to pull of miracles at times.

Seth & Matt – The NC weather has been pretty shoddy recently. At least here in Chapel tHrill, it’s been a crazy mix of hot and cold. Still it is one of my favorite places to be.

Tony Wright March 26, 2007 at 2:28 pm

I really hope that Kentucky takes Billy Gillespie away from Texas ATM. As a die-hard Texas Tech fan, I hate having him in the conference – even if we were able to beat them both times we played them

Tony – from my myopic Big XII world

IncrediBILL March 26, 2007 at 8:49 pm

I’ll admit a Canadian invented the game, I already knew that, but he did so trying to achieve the American Dream! :)

Ever notice those Canadians are never chasing the Canadian Dream?

Go figure.

John March 27, 2007 at 12:03 pm

If you list Kentucky, Kansas and UNC as three of “your” teams, then you have zero credibility ripping Duke.

Thanks!

Amanda Watlington March 27, 2007 at 10:39 pm

The Carolina Women’s Basketball team has made it to the Final Four — Go Heels.

Nabeel Hyatt March 28, 2007 at 8:18 am

Ah men Matt.. those years when Duke was in the Final Four and UNC was bouncing around the first and second rounds were murder.

Bad to see it fall apart the way it did in the Elite 8 – but they’ll be back.

Maurice April 4, 2007 at 12:27 pm

What a great season, there were certainly some big surprises. Fortunately I was at a wedding while UCLA was getting creamed. I turned off the Blackberry soon after the second half started.

Matt you should watch Euroleague – european basketball league, those guys really know how to play good basketball maybe better tactic than in NBA cause guys in NBA are better physical but they are not efficient as guys in Euroleague. Try to watch some game and if you like basketball I can guarantee that you will not disappointed.
