Lazy Saturday afternoon

May 20, 2006

in Personal, Weblog/blog

So what am I doing on the first day of my vacation? That’s right, reviewing 2-3 papers for AIRWeb. Grrr. That’s the last thing left though. One more paper to review and then I’m going to try to stop thinking about work or search-related stuff for a while. I’ll try something like a good book. Or Kingdom of Loathing:

Mount Noob

Hope everyone else is having a good Saturday too.

Oh yes, this is going to be a busy month. With Matt gone I’m hard at work on creating hundreds of new search engine spam pages.. Gotta give him something to do when he returns right?

j/k I don’t do that….. seriously. But I have been working on my various websites all freaking day. I completely re-wrote the text message sending engine for txt2day.com (the one on your google personalized homepage).

Again.. Matt I’m jealous of your vacation. We programmers in Detroit have no idea what that word means. I think i get 2 weeks upon completion of my 3rd year.. and I think I get 3 weeks after 10. I don’t think anybody’s made it further than that.

Scott Clark May 20, 2006 at 1:49 pm

Sitting here writing on the porch in Chevy Chase. Doing the Business Lexington pc. on Google Calendar this time. It’s beautiful in Lex today, people walking through Ashland Park with dogs, on bikes, etc. Birds singing. Beagle is laying in the sun. Mayberry-Style. I do not miss the Silicon Valley today. :-)

Bernie May 20, 2006 at 2:27 pm

I realize that your on vacaton, but still check your blog. Bottom line matt your a workalholic. I know its hard to push away. And i’m sure everyboby is happy that you are still posting. how about one last q&a grabbag.
How long before a site is fully back in the dc after a reinclusion request?
Enjoy

Leonid May 20, 2006 at 2:52 pm

I am simply coding, for example, so you are in a much better position :-)

Shoemoney May 20, 2006 at 3:22 pm

Matt- you going to visit he in-laws at all on your vaca ?

The Adam That Doesn't Belong To Matt May 20, 2006 at 3:23 pm

How are you gonna manage not to think about SE-related stuff when you get an SE-related question even when you post something unrelated? If you can pull that off, you da man.

SEARCH ENGINES Web May 20, 2006 at 3:55 pm

Preparing to leave for the Enterprise Search Summit at the HIlton in NYC
enterprisesearchsummit.com
Always, so many interesting people and exhibits
BTW:
Google, Microsoft, Fast & Vivisimo will be exhibiting and the Streaming Media exhibition will be there at the same time.

Should arrive in NYC by the end of the day

The weather is always PERFECT there in late May :D – it would be the perfect time for the SES NYC to be held instead of Febuary :-?

Tim Converse May 20, 2006 at 6:15 pm

I am now officially racked with guilt. :/ The scheduling was not _designed_ to coincide with your vacation, really.

Joseph Hunkins May 20, 2006 at 9:23 pm

If you are “working” and blogging on the first day of vacation I don’t want to see the look in your wife’s eyes right now. I know it well.

Joe Duck’s recommended Northern California/ Southern Oregon travel loop: Day 1-3 Bed and Breakfast in Ashland Oregon. Take in a play or two, drive up to Crater Lake. Then over to Coast via Oregon Caves – spend a night in the Chateau if possible. Then down to Mendocino for another few Bed and Breakfast nights.

I can almost guarantee you’ll be able to work and blog from home safely after that trip.

Have a nice relaxing holiday and leave our RSS feeds alone!

All we cuttlets need a break too

:)

Keith May 21, 2006 at 1:40 pm

Enjoy your vacation Matt…

When you return, request a transfer to the new, upgraded Sydney office of Google…here in Oz we get four weeks annual leave from year one, plus 9 public holidays each year…and if you work for the same company for 10 years you get three months paid vacation…EVERY 10 years…productivity? Weeell…plus you get to have sand between your toes at Christmas…

Again, enjoy!

Mike May 21, 2006 at 5:43 pm

Relax and Chill!

Matt Cutts May 21, 2006 at 9:54 pm

No worries, Tim. Now the reviews are done… and you’ll still have yours to do. :)

Viera May 21, 2006 at 11:08 pm

Hi Matt, just wondering if you are really on vacation or running away before Google implodes;)

maxD May 22, 2006 at 2:13 am

Man I always take my PC on holiday. Even on my honeymoon in Japan. I get bored after 3 days on holiday and always chose hotels ( online of course) that have internet. Day is like this. Go out and do something dung business hours, so that is when you would usually be on the PC. Come back after exhausting day and look at mail etc. Go out for dinner pub whatever and if I am not drunk enough look at more email, forums, blogs etc. Also skype saves me a shed load in roaming calls from my mobile.

JohnC May 22, 2006 at 5:14 am

Just remember to load up on Frigid Ninja Stars before heading over to the Naughty Sorceress and to equip your Wand of Nagmar. :)

KOL is a blast.

Matthew Hagston May 22, 2006 at 6:31 am

don’t work too hard on your vacation! Just finished mine, seemed like all i did was work … but at least i worked for me instead of someone else. ;-)

Man, mondays after vacation are just bad …

Watches May 22, 2006 at 10:34 am

Vacation seems a long way from here hope you enjoyed yours!

Ben May 22, 2006 at 12:20 pm

Well, great. Here I am loathing now…

steve tateossian May 22, 2006 at 12:26 pm

Checked out Kingdom of Loathing, looks like some serious addictions could develop from that … of the twisted and demented variety. ;)

The copy and content writing on the site is funny as hell …

AHFX May 22, 2006 at 2:14 pm

My brothers have been trying to get me to do KoL for quite a while. One has ascended twice. The other is a boozer and spends most of his time staggering around trying to keep extra turns rolling in. The copy is incredible and very very very funny. I’ve only played a few times, but it is a riot.

Have a great time on vacation.

Ralf May 22, 2006 at 2:17 pm

Funny, Matts favorite Ale-8-One???

Darren May 22, 2006 at 4:39 pm

Well, if you need a vacation in Europe Matt, just give me a yell – I’m a great tour guide and beer buddy :D Have a good break.

Stefan Misaras May 23, 2006 at 12:02 am

Yeah, vacation in Europe…have a nice vacation, mr. Matt! Same here in Europe (or @ least in E Europe) about the web-programmers: we don’t really understand the words “holiday” or “vacation” (I guess we have to look it up in the dictionary more :) ).

But I also hope u’re keeping one eye open to the spammers! :) Especially the European ones. I am too very troubled by so many of them. I try to optimize my website (and sometimes even to super-optimize it), but I don’t really have a chance against some competitors that use all these super-optimization-close-to-spamming techniques… so I just do the job I’m supposed to do: offer the good & quality content about the products we sell …

Have a nice vacation, Matt, and … do consider Europe (in the future @ least) :)

Cristian May 23, 2006 at 6:24 am

Rest and recover well from the daily stress. Work is never done :)

Kris Farmer May 23, 2006 at 9:56 am

Matt,
Looks like you aren’t the only one going on vacation. How about the move Microsoft just maid to force 1000 software developers to take one week unpaid vacation.

http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/topnews/wpn-60-20060523MicrosoftTellsWorkerstoTakeUnpaidVacation.html

Couldn’t Billy personally write that check?

Rahul May 23, 2006 at 10:02 am

Matt Cutts:
I want your attention to a problem of a “different” kind my website is facing in Google, because Google team will just ignore it. :(

I sent email to sesnyc06 but its no longer working, I sent again to bostonpubcon2006 (Subject: Problem of a Different Kind in Google).

I have also filled up a Reinclusion Request [#58xxxx88].

Loren Baker May 23, 2006 at 10:11 am

Matt, Good to see that you are an Orioles fan. Go Baltimore! Go Baltimore Toot Orioles! The Maryland State Bird.

Ben May 23, 2006 at 11:52 am

What’s with the comment spam? Work is “never done”? Matt’s favorite “Ale-8-One”? Don’t comment spammers know where they’re spamming?

Step May 23, 2006 at 7:17 pm

Darn you, Matt! Now look what you’ve done…

I can’t stop loathing, and I’m out of adventures by 8:30 every morning! Arghh!! Still such a noob, and no idea how people get thousands or millions in meat!!!!!

Cristian May 24, 2006 at 12:09 am

Ben, comment spam ? I was linking to an article that i think he should read.

Get a grip on yourself ;)

Ralf May 24, 2006 at 7:01 am

Ben no bad feelings,
I hate comment spam too, I also enjoy the art of hidden messages.

MyLene May 25, 2006 at 5:01 am

Nice saturda for u matt, but last saturday me and my bf break up.;( ,

Neil May 25, 2006 at 7:48 am

Nice Pic by the way! – One of yours?

Chillin’… Need To Do The Same!

Ben May 25, 2006 at 5:26 pm

Any other time wasters similar to KoL I should know about (browser based)?

Cartoon Doll Emporium May 26, 2006 at 7:00 am

Ben, you could try the site my name links to. It is a site where you dress people up online. Kinda girly, but there are plenty of celebrities and some politicians too. Plus – you could win a pony. :)

I’ll also be making a Matt Cutts dress up doll in honor of the Cuttster’s return.

tony scott May 26, 2006 at 7:21 am

Matt, you didn’t say where you going.

Bigfinger May 26, 2006 at 10:23 am

Hope the holidays are good and I know for one I will be waiting to read about them in your blog.

Matt Cutts May 26, 2006 at 8:24 pm

Ben, Kingdom of Loathing was my big time-waster. I haven’t seen anything else like it. Step, try to get a cottage or a house or a pagoda. Spruce up that campground and you’ll be able to adventure more because it won’t take as long to heal.

Personally, I beat the Naughty Sorceress a while ago but haven’t played it since because I can’t decide whether to ascend, or what I need to do before ascending. Good problems to have, though.

Step May 27, 2006 at 6:50 pm

Matt, thanks for the tip. I’ve got a barskin tent now – need to figure out how to get something better. I’m still trying to kill the boss bat (almost had him last time, but didn’t buy enough healing stuff!!).

Ellen Weber June 1, 2006 at 9:06 pm

Hope you have a great break away from the “reviews” because that creates another look at systems that work in new ways. It reminded me of the times I ran up against huge chasms in technology -- which is not heard for me… and my mind rewired itself during a break. So I nailed it soon after the return. Happy rewiring!

RockyB June 11, 2006 at 9:52 am

Heh, I don’t read the blog for a week or so, and come back to a mention of the very game I just started playing ;)

Matthew Hagston June 13, 2006 at 8:30 am

Hehe, got my barkskin tent too! haven’t figured out any higher tents and such yet. Did figure out how to make some sausage pizzas! Killed the boss bat, up to the Goblin king now but he keeps killing me off in a couple of hits. Raiding the goblin treasury so i can get some money and buy some skills up. good money there!, least for me it’s good.

very addictive game …

Trish June 18, 2006 at 3:30 am

Lucky you, I’ll have to wait until August for my vacations.

Shanks Pandiath June 22, 2006 at 9:16 am

You are a hardworking man; Put down the paper and enjoy the vacation.

Scented Candles December 15, 2006 at 6:31 am

Good for you! I did not have a chance to take vacation until Christmas.

Sterling Silver Jewelry December 15, 2006 at 6:37 am

Still working hard on Saturday ??? Get a cup of coffee and relax…

Shadow1980 December 19, 2006 at 2:45 pm

Kingdom of Loathing is one of the biggest time-wasters I have seen in a long time. Great fun – love the style of humour being used. I’d recommend people to give it a try, it’s free so you don’t really have anything to lose. (Except a lot of free time ;-) )

Btw- it is also a great way to pass a ‘lunch-break’ ;-)

Decorative Throw Pillows February 1, 2007 at 10:54 am

Glad you relaxed and enjoyed it!

Ruben Zevallos Jr. July 2, 2008 at 4:18 am

Vacation… I hope to have a real one at the end of this year… I mean… something that I do not use to work in my personal projects…
