How to subscribe to just my Google/SEO posts

I’ve got some pent-up techie/gadget blogging in me, and I know that not everyone wants to read that. I’ve mentioned before how to get just my Google/SEO posts, but I’ll repeat in case you didn’t see it the first time.

The short answer is to subscribe to

https://www.mattcutts.com/blog/type/googleseo/feed/

instead of my main blog feed at

https://www.mattcutts.com/blog/feed/

This trick works with any category, so you could (for example) subscribe to my Movies/Videos category by clicking on the “Movies/Videos” category over on the right-hand side of my blog and then adding “feed” to get https://www.mattcutts.com/blog/type/movies/feed/ . (This trick works with lots of WordPress blogs, by the way. Ain’t WordPress great?)

Now that you know how to get only the SEO/Google posts, I refuse to be guilt-tripped about doing some non-SEO posts, especially when my top-two traffic posts in 2007 were geek/Linux/iPhone posts instead of SEO posts. πŸ™‚

  1. Matt,

“I refuse to be guilt-tripped about doing some non-SEO posts, especially when my top-two traffic posts in 2007 were geek/Linux/iPhone posts instead of SEO posts.”

Fair enough. But then you may wish to update the title of your blog:

    From:

Matt Cutts: Gadgets, Google, and SEO

    To:

Matt Cutts: Gadgets, Geek, Linux, and iPhone πŸ™‚

  2. Matt, i should post my question here , not under “Ignoring me”.
I had added your seo rss feed to my RSS reader, but when i try to add the main feed, it told me that the address is not a rss feed address, Can you check that?
i would like to read your article in my email software πŸ™‚

btw, i totally agree with what Harith had said!

  3. Thanks for the separate feed, though I like ALL your content!

  4. Great,, I just blog about it the other day and this might be of interesting to your thousands of readers.

  5. The I.T. posts are good.

A great idea for a future post would be to doing an overview of Google job interview process – seoptimization.blog.com/2514478/ – including how to prepare, examples of mistakes made by candidates, etc.

Do you and your colleagues ever do a pre screening phone interview – what do you look for in a conversation. What do you look for in an in person interview.

  6. I think Google likes the element of ‘surprise’ in their interviews.

Matt. Write about whatever you like. It’s your blog.

If you’re doing Google at work and Google at home, you’ll burn out.

  7. Nice try Matt but why would we want to restrict ourselves form hearing your words of wisdom?

  8. @harith
    ROFL

  9. Aww. That’s a shame. I think blogs have flavour and personality which you only can enjoy and soak up by reading the full thing. I enjoy your other posts – they help me relate to Matt Cutts the person rather than just the slices of time you kindly find for SEO queries!

Ok, Matt. This is your blog and obviously you can write whatever you want. But I agree with Harith: if your top-two traffic posts in 2007 were geek/Linux/iPhone a good SEO advice could be to change your title in order to include your top traffic topics. πŸ™‚

  11. I have found that when I am responding to a question from someone about a particular topic the search feature can also be quite useful.
I can do a quick search for what I’ve written that would apply to what they are asking about and then send them a link to (hopefully) several posts.

  12. I have enjoyed the past couple of tech posts, and think it is great to break up the topics with something you enjoy besides SEO. You clearly know a lot about tech and SEO, so I am delighted to see either topic any time.

  13. Long Live the Geek Posts! πŸ™‚

  14. Matt
Thanks for the reminder for those who just like to subscribe to SEO only.
I also Love WordPress. I always suggest WordPress for small Businesses here in my areas. Another thing is even if they dont have a website, they can create something in a very little time, Submit it to Local with their Information. In one of the seminar, we helped start ups, Non Profits and Small Businesses to Create their own Blog in less time without spending any money and still have placement in the Local and Maps and create their own Content including videos, Images etc with Create your own Map feature. And when they left the Room, they all had their own Blog, Local Presence and Happy. πŸ™‚ So yes WordPress is Great, not to mention How user friendly and search engine friendly it is.

  15. What an ingenious way to separate your friends from the real world.

  16. I’m glad to see some variety in your posts, Matt. I really enjoyed your “Why do I blog” post (http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/why-do-i-blog/) last year and I wrote a related blog post myself (http://blog.demodulated.com/2007/04/10/however-you%e2%80%99re-blogging-it%e2%80%99s-wrong/) about what is appropriate subject matter.

I’d be interested to hear your follow-up thoughts on this topic. Chiefly, I’d be very interested to hear your definition of the term “blog”. It’s such a moving target and such a diverse platform that everyone has their own take on the issue.

  17. p.s., more action shots of your kitties, please!

  18. It’s your personal blog… shouldn’t you be able to post whatever you want? I mean you setup a disclaimer!? πŸ™‚ Lol… I would be interested to hear in a month or so the subscriber status of the two feeds. I for one happen to be interested in whatever you feel like sharing… kind of scary that I’d admit that…

  19. Brian, I’ve got one (in)action picture of Emmy that you’ll like. πŸ™‚

  20. Yea, where do I sign up for the LOLcat posts? I can’t get my kitty on the cheezburger site no matter what I do, so I’ll post him everywhere else, dammit.

Or I just may start my own.

  21. SEW: A lot’s been written already about the Google technical interview process. A quick search on Google for Google technical interview will bring up a number of blog postings about people’s experiences with the process.

It is a stressful process, no doubt about that, and it’s not really something you look forward to. My experience with it certainly did help the revision of Programming Interviews Exposed, but I can’t say it’s something I’d want to do every day.

Mind you, the people at Google themselves probably don’t want to be doing it every day… it takes a lot of preparation to do a technical interview, especially if you need to come up with new interview questions.

It would be good to know, however, how much the interview process has changed recently, at least from the technical side of things.

  22. Touche, Matt.

    Thanks for the post πŸ˜‰

  23. LOL do you have a feed that has everything except the reminders about how to subscribe to just a certain feed?

(ok so I don’t remember the last time it happened, but I do remember reading on =P)

  24. or people can simply go to http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/type/googleseo/
    πŸ˜‰

  25. I too like reading all your posts. πŸ™‚

  26. Hi Matt
To be frank I am visiting your blog after quite some time as my feeds were full of posts on gadgets/gizmos on your blog.
With so many changes being done in Google SE environment, I am much more interested about SE related posts. πŸ˜€

  27. As someone with one foot in the geek world, and one foot in the human world I love the geek posts. If I did not read here how long would it have taken me to find out about Defcon, Wordcamp, Werewolf or Ubuntu. I mean how long would that have taken to make it to me through the Real World, or Larry King Live?

Being slightly rebellious if half the fun of life anyway.
    Bring on the Geek Posts!
    dk

P.S. Also to bring in some perspective, one might ask their wife or neighbor how off topic it would be a for someone who is in charge of spam at Google to write about an I-Phone, or a new Operating System. My guess is their answer would be something like, “Doesn’t Google make the I-Phone?”

  28. hey Matt,

I like your techy posts! Please keep them coming and when you are considering future blog topics, please give us your opinion on which 08 presidential candidate you think is best for the future of the Internet here in the US.

  29. Yeah Matt; We like all your posts….Not. I personally liked the naked pro cheerleaders video/audio/text you put together a few months ago. πŸ˜€

  30. Matt, your Blog title ‘as is’ covers all bases. Don’t listen to the whiners as they will have you chasing your tail for their own enjoyment.

I would MUCH rather you post as you feel inclined. What these whiners do not get is, *quality* only comes when you post on subjects as you feel inclined.

How about all you high maintenance squeaky wheels post YOUR 2007 traffic stats so we can see if you REALLY know what you speak of πŸ™‚

  31. Dave (original)

“Matt, your Blog title β€˜as is’ covers all bases.”

Make sure that your TITLE tags and ALT attributes are descriptive and accurate.

    πŸ™‚

  32. Dave (original)

Squeaky, that is part of SEOing. So, like I said, post YOUR 2007 stats so we can compare them with Matt’s and see who REALLY knows about which they speak πŸ™‚

My money is on Matt and will likely double IF you post your 2007 stats.

BTW, the Title tag is what you see in the top of your Browser when on a specific page NOT what Matt titles his blog. Do try and keep up πŸ™‚

  33. Dave (original)

Here is some basics SEO for free πŸ™‚

    The title of: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/

Reads: [title]Matt Cutts: Gadgets, Google, and SEO[/title]

while the content of the same page, covers:

    – Three tips to protect your WordPress installation
    – How to subscribe to just my Google/SEO posts
    – Formatting USB hard drives for Ubuntu (Gutsy Gibbon)
    – How to dynamically adjust an iframe’s height
    – Data portability for your email, searches, calendar, …

As you see, the TITLE of the page http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/ doesn’t match the same page contents. πŸ™‚

Moreover…Matts argument that “I refuse to be guilt-tripped about doing some non-SEO posts, especially when my top-two traffic posts in 2007 were geek/Linux/iPhone posts instead of SEO posts.” indicates that he intends in future to create content in accordance with search engines traffic to his blog. I.e Matt intends to create contents for the search engines, not for his users, unfortunately πŸ˜‰

Make pages for users, not for search engines.

    Google Webmaster Guidelines

  34. Ok I have done it.
    Deb

  35. At least I feel like I am in good company. πŸ™‚

  36. You must be kidding, Harith? Tell me you are NOT in the SEO/SEM business…………pleeeeease.

The title of: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/” Reads: [title]Matt Cutts: Gadgets, Google, and SEO[/title]

That is the title of the main blog page which covers ALL basis as on the main page there is frequently a mix of topics.

The Google guideline you have quoted refers to each and every page on a Web site. If you actually LOOK at the top of this page in your Browser, you will see THIS page title.
“How to subscribe to just my Google/SEO posts”

A home page Title should always be generic in that covers all topics that the sites *pages* cover.

I notice you are VERY quite on the challenge to post YOUR we stats. For good reason too I bet. LOL!

  37. Dave (original)

“A home page Title should always be generic in that covers all topics that the sites *pages* cover.”

Houston, we have a problem πŸ™‚

  38. All the comment say i like this i like that…i don’t find nothing original in this post is better stop follow the the wave “I love Google” and make some constructive criticism more seo productive for all internet users.

  39. Dave (original)

Correction, YOU have a problem πŸ™‚

  40. Dave (original)

Harith, like Matt, I’m not going to suffer a fool any longer and ignore you erroneous misinformed dribble πŸ™‚

  41. Dave (original)

“Harith, like Matt, I’m not going to suffer a fool any longer and ignore you erroneous misinformed dribble”

No…no. Please.. you have been very entertaining, especially after a hard day most of it was spent on doing traffic analysis and reporting. For your entertainment hours, I’m prepared to pay you in advanced ethical SEO hours. Do we have a deal.

Ok. That was a joke πŸ™‚

    Now to some serious talk.

I haven’t expected Matt to reply to my recent posts especially:

    This one .. and

    This one .. and

    This one..and

    This one..

Because… Matt is a wise man and he knows exactly when not to reply. RESPEK!

In return, he knows also that I differ with him respectfully and prefer to post my comments on his own blog to avoid the traditional Google/Matt bashers to take advantage of my comments if I post them somewhere else.

Now…back to your entertaining posts πŸ™‚

  42. Matt, your Blog title β€˜as is’ covers all bases from my point of view.
some will have you chasing your tail for their own enjoyment.

keep up doing this good works, you spend time and energy in us
