Halloween 2007: LOLCat

October 31, 2007

in Personal

This picture pretty much says it all:

Matt Cutts as LOL cat

The T-shirt is hand-made with an iron-on. The only thing you’re not seeing is my tail in the back, and the back of the shirt says “K THX BYE.” :)

If you don’t spend all your time on the internet, you can find out more about LOLCats here.

Matt,

Now that is a sight! You should have worn that during the “are paid links evil session” and maybe Greg and those guys would have taken you more seriously! lol

John A. Davis October 31, 2007 at 1:02 pm

Man your big on yourself. I guess maybe what is what a blog is for.

Chris Bartow October 31, 2007 at 1:18 pm

That’s dedication to a holiday. It competes, maybe even beats, Brad’s Facebook Outfit.

http://brad.livejournal.com/2345245.html

Tanner Christensen October 31, 2007 at 1:19 pm

Wow Matt, you’ve really outdone yourself this year. Did you do the face paint yourself?

Francois Faubert October 31, 2007 at 1:28 pm

Not many nerds can get away with that kind of costume!

Matt Cutts October 31, 2007 at 1:29 pm

John A. Davis, I pretty much always do a Halloween post in case people are interested.

Chris, I think the Facebook outfit was a really creative idea. :)

Peter (IMC) October 31, 2007 at 1:36 pm

I’m so glad we don’t have Halloween here.

I remember one time we were invited to a halloween party at the house of an American living in Amsterdam. It was clear who were Dutch and who were Americans. The americans were all looking like that picture above while the Dutch really just tried to do as little as possible.

Cultural differences are fun! :)

On the other hand, in the south half o holland, Carnaval is used to look like the picture above. I remember once I went partying dressed as a chinese in a kimono, with a yellow face and my hair painted black. 3 days of carnaval was a lot of fun. Though it was also freaking cold wearing just a kimono. (Temperatures were below freezing and in Holland, carnaval means going from bar to bar, so basically you are outside most of the time.) It was actually 4 of us dressed liked that.

Oh well,. that was a long time ago.. :) Now I live in Brazil, and carnaval is done a bit different here. But also no halloween here.

What you do for carnaval in the US, Matt?

martinsc October 31, 2007 at 1:43 pm

that kinda reminds me of this guy that might be also in on of my top costumes – a youtube video page http://www.core77.com/blog/object_culture/omg_awesome_party_guy_vid_youtube_page_halloween_costume_7931.asp

Dan Bowling October 31, 2007 at 1:45 pm

Oh my god! That is so creative. How many people knew what it was?

mark October 31, 2007 at 1:46 pm

lol.

I’ll leave it at that. :)

Sasa October 31, 2007 at 2:13 pm

Matt I don’t know how to say this, I don’t know if I can say it in any different way then I will, but that is LAME!

Bruce October 31, 2007 at 2:14 pm

Wow! So what was the inspiration?

Danny Sullivan October 31, 2007 at 2:15 pm

To quote Matt Cutts: “My eyes! It burns!!”

Rebecca Kelley October 31, 2007 at 2:17 pm

So…are you a Furry for Halloween, or is that just your typical Wednesday night getup?

* Miss Universe October 31, 2007 at 2:25 pm

Can the rest of the readers embed JPGs or PNGs in the posts. It would be cool

Joel Lesser October 31, 2007 at 2:28 pm

now that is slightly disturbing… what does Frank and Ozzie thing of your outfit??

Jonathan Dingman October 31, 2007 at 2:28 pm

Need I say more when I say, “wow.”

Todd Emaus October 31, 2007 at 2:35 pm

Holy crappy Matt, thats hilarious…

Unfortunately at my work no one dresses up…boring!

Rahir October 31, 2007 at 3:03 pm

Hi Matt,

I want to be a cuckoo from France, I thought you liked not to be a cat, and I tell you ‘deep cats’, good evening Matt, delirium. See Ya

Matt Cutts October 31, 2007 at 3:12 pm

Bruce, I was out for a walk with my wife and we were brainstorming. I think it was her idea. :)

Danny, are you talking about when I commented on this picture:

Danny at Halloween?

Hee hee.

Hey, don’t make me call you Beck. ;)

Joel, funny that you asked that. It really did freak Ozzy out a little bit. He’s not used to another alpha cat in the house. Emmy just slept right through everything, of course.

Dean Clatworthy October 31, 2007 at 3:12 pm

I actually lol’d Matt. What an awesome idea!

Michael Dorausch October 31, 2007 at 3:47 pm

Curious to know if that cheeseburger was gotten while in costume or in preparation.

Best photo I’ve seen all day!

Rahir October 31, 2007 at 3:54 pm

Matt looks like Willow everything nice! It happens to be not as a villain!

mercutiom October 31, 2007 at 3:56 pm

roflmao. Love it, way to meme it out there.

Rahir October 31, 2007 at 5:40 pm
Lee Odden October 31, 2007 at 8:51 pm

Classic. Did you actually eat the McD cheeseburger or did you walk around with it all night? :)

Jan October 31, 2007 at 10:38 pm

Oh My…I am in LOVE…:-)

As a lifelong cat lover, I always thought Vincent, in the tv series Beauty and the Beast was the sexiest thing ever. But Matt, you’ve got him beat….and my little calico girl Baby is having a hissy fit…:-)

Jan

Dale Hay October 31, 2007 at 10:44 pm

Oh my goodness.

I didn’t celebrate Halloween.. I’m too old now.

Gunjan Pandya October 31, 2007 at 11:41 pm

Great Idea!! Happy Halloween.

sachin October 31, 2007 at 11:58 pm

Looking cool in that picture
by the way icanhascheezburger.com cool site , i think you inspired from this

Dr. David Klein November 1, 2007 at 12:24 am

Halloween just rocks.

Matt have a look at my blog for today if you have a second.

Your nose looks like it took some serious time. I really wish more people jumped into Halloween in the U.S. more. Holidays are an excellent excuse for total stupidity, everything from costumes, to shooting flammable objects in the sky, and cutting down trees and covering them with lights!

I’m looking forward to Festivus! Does it fall during Pubcon this year?

bob rains November 1, 2007 at 2:05 am

At this point I’ve looked at this picture in at least 11 stages of drunk, I’m talking like on the razors edge, edge, like an new razor that shaves so close it’s like 5 rotating blades of drunk, and it still creeps me out.

In all seriousness please let my wife make your costume next year. If she can make me look “cute” as a pink unicorn, just think of what she could do with those adorable cheeks.

Robin November 1, 2007 at 2:55 am

And thus the obvious pun of LOLcutts was born

VidiMonkey November 1, 2007 at 3:04 am

Ok now that’s scary, I’m going to have nightmares. Well I was thinking something more along these lines:
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/975/nowthatuo6.gif

printout + backed on cardboard like one of those press signs.

Harith November 1, 2007 at 5:02 am

———————–

Matt,

So you decided to “try” to look like my good friend Ozzie . Fair enough… but pls don’t forget to pay him the due Royalty Fees :)

Btw, I though you are a “Happy-Meal-Enthusiast” not a Cheezburger consumer ;)

Harith November 1, 2007 at 5:43 am

test…. :(

azuka November 1, 2007 at 6:38 am

Huh? a cat? It’s… funny. But It’s not creepy. Well, a cat with a MD cheeseburger… maybe is terrifying… for a dog on diet. =P

miaaaaauuuuu

azuka November 1, 2007 at 6:42 am

Awwww… the cat site is so CUTE! I love the ? pic… xD

Carolyn Grantham November 1, 2007 at 7:41 am

Strangely … attracted … Must … look … away …

Lani November 1, 2007 at 7:56 am

I’m finding Danny’s photo a bit disturbing :(

OnlyMe November 1, 2007 at 8:33 am

I’m finding Danny’s photo quite sexy!

Sorry Matt hope you forgive.

I think I’m in love…no seriously, that picture made me question if google had finally gotten to your brain, but then the LOLCATS web site made it all clear. :)

Remo November 1, 2007 at 10:29 am

Great costume, never saw the site before but it inspired me to make this :)

Heh — my eyes, they burnz twices!

Matt Cutts November 1, 2007 at 10:47 am

Lee Odden, I walked around with it. By the end of the day, it wasn’t very appealing to eat anymore. :)

blackcatseo — I love it, Remo.

Thom November 1, 2007 at 11:13 am

Matt, are you gay? You look kinda gay. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I’m just saying. You know the cats made up as cats in Cats look like male cats and the kittens made up as cats in Cats look… well, hot. You just look kinda kittenish in that effeminate human male dressed as a girly cat kinda way. Again, I’m just saying.

Remo November 1, 2007 at 12:54 pm

@Matt – only bad thing is now I wish I had the domain

Sherri November 1, 2007 at 1:41 pm

Oh my gosh, Matt…you are wayyy more handsome than I envisioned. I’m grinning at your picture but my dog is baring his teeth!!

Convent Station Guy November 1, 2007 at 2:04 pm

OK, you could have looked a little happier about having all that makup on. hehe

Catfish November 1, 2007 at 2:41 pm

Hey Matt,

That’s a pretty good makeup job you got going there..lol. Your ready for broadway now bro.

Hey but I got a question for ya! How do I get you or Adam Lasnik to come speak at our Internet Marketing Conference here in San Diego in February? It’s http://www.onlinemarketingsummit.com . We will be hosting about 400 Internet marketing professionals from a lot of very big companies and we would love to have a Google representative there to talk about duplicate content issues or a number of other topics. So far I can’t figure out who to contact in Google to arrange something. Could you please help? Thanks man.

Catfish

Good to see you at SES San Jose, sorry I didn’t have time to finish our conversation about making supplemental results visible in the Web Master Tools. But I still want you guys to do it!!! ;)

Nick - I think the original Nick here. November 1, 2007 at 3:01 pm

Wow. that’s one creepy photo. Nice makeup work though. Must have taken you hours.

rob November 1, 2007 at 3:04 pm

Great picture Matt, it’s on my dartboard ;)

Great pic though, you look very different!

Hannes Johnson November 1, 2007 at 4:29 pm

hahaha… (pause to breathe) …hahahaha.
Best. Costume. Ever.

Seeing you face-painted as a cat was funny enough but then I scrolled down and saw “I Can Has Cheezburger?” – brilliant! :D

LOLcaption: “I iz takn self-purrtrait. I iz a purrty kat” ;)

Marc Rasmussen November 1, 2007 at 6:39 pm

Matt,

What happened to the goatee?

Omar Yesid Mariño November 1, 2007 at 6:47 pm

Hehehe..! Now, I understand. From now on, you will be playing cat and mouse. You are the cat and the link sellers are mice.

luxury bedding November 1, 2007 at 7:08 pm

I hope this does not reflect the future of google

Matt Cutts November 1, 2007 at 8:18 pm

Marc Rasmussen, the goatee had to go for the makeup to look right. It’ll grow back in a few days.

Linda Bustos November 2, 2007 at 3:00 pm

Marcia November 3, 2007 at 7:20 am

Mr C, very skillful use of eyeliner. Who did your eye makeup?

Nicolás November 3, 2007 at 12:48 pm

First at all, the spam protection it’s hard … i just make a mistake a few times.

This is my first time here!!!! (On my country we say.. “There is a first time for everything”), it’s ok ..

The second thing i saw is that you do not want nothing about “Webmasters”, so i will forget my stupid question
¿Is google a AI Software?
There is no answer for it on google webmasters ..

Ok send me 2 cheezburger to Argentina, i will love it :)

And thanks google for the wonderfull work he does (For me google is not a program is a person ..)

Oh i forgot… Google is not making a good job, he just let my PR on 3 ¬¬ fu***

nishu November 4, 2007 at 3:13 am

Matt,

Pretty good make up.. But really it never lived up to impression of lolcats on icanhascheezburger?. You could have tried to observe behavior of cats for a longer time.

BTW T-shirt is lovely.

BlogMasterPg November 4, 2007 at 4:18 am

In my Country ( Italy) Halloween is not a traditional fest. That year, in my town some english students made a fest on Halloween night, but, a poor female student , 22 years old was murder by unknow ‘ripper’ killer, as a sacrifice. all town think that is some satanic ritual: why? Why in ‘07 hppen these things? We’ll never know it. Sorry, my comment is not ‘in line’ of one fest, but some brutal ritual must to remember. Bye, to another better time. (and scuse for my bad english language); I’m an a new SEO fan…

Earl Allen Boek November 4, 2007 at 7:58 am

Judd November 4, 2007 at 8:44 pm

Hey man,
While building our SEO business (from home) and training my right-hand man (my lovely wife), I’ve done my best to educate her on the Who’s Who of my take on Teh Intraweb (SEO-related).

Your name has come up many a time, from your various celebrity appearances, no doubt, but nothing can really drive it home like:

“See honey? He’s just a nerd blogging and being stupid, just like we do, and now LOOK… LOLCATS!”

She’s now a fan and may or may not chuck her knickers at you.

Smooches.

Thomas November 4, 2007 at 9:26 pm

Very nice. I posted it at our pet social site. :)

Just my humble opinion, but I like the face (sans makeup) without the goatee. You might want to consult with The Missus, but you look better without it.

And I can’t wait to show this to my daughter, who *lives* for LOLcats – after I explain what a Matt Cutts is of course.

Harith November 5, 2007 at 9:35 am

Hey LOLCat :)

I see backlinks update on GOOG’s DCs. Should we expect soon an update of PageRank of Google Toolbar?

Thanks a bunch.

Btw, haven’t you finished yet of that logistics thing?

Champi November 5, 2007 at 10:14 am

Cats.. oeff.. But nice done. Looks good.

Champi November 5, 2007 at 10:17 am

@Peter (IMC)
Indeed.. i am from the south.. carnaval.. so is the word. Halloween is just a little party compared to dutch carnaval.

Alex November 5, 2007 at 11:42 am

Yea I agree, this photo is sexy LOL ! :]

Proofreader November 5, 2007 at 11:45 am

David Castle November 6, 2007 at 3:18 am

Matt, Hi – I have a direct question to ask you.
http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=105728

Are you posting in that forum?

My reasons

I am a moderator at WebProWorld and the question about Google and paid Directories has raised its head.
1 – Would Google penanlise a site that has paid for inclusion in the Yahoo Directory?
2 – Will Google penanlise any ‘paid for link’ in a respected Directory such as JoeAnt?

Could you please start a thread on this so that I may put forward questions being asked within WPW?

Kind regards David

Niall Buchanan November 6, 2007 at 5:11 am

Nice picture, but im curious did you carry that cheeseburger around with you all night?

Harith November 6, 2007 at 6:03 am

David Castle

Matt wrote a very informative post related to paid links. You might find there answers for most of your questions:

How to report paid links – April 14, 2007

Nozomi November 6, 2007 at 9:58 am

This is sick. Lolcats is a disease in the same family as splogs, mfas, zango, domain parking sites and paid links.

The “google ecology” around search, adsense and other forms of monetization can only pay about 10,000 sites globally enough money to make worthwhile content. The rest of us are left working for free or devising schemes to fill the web with junk content that costs nothing to make, i.e. lolcats

To celebrate lolcats is to celebrate the gradual death of the web, brought to you by Google.

Cotton Rohrscheib November 6, 2007 at 10:25 am

I check in on your blog from time to time, just wanted to say nice job on the costume! You went all out!

Ace November 6, 2007 at 10:55 am

uuuh, ok I guess this may not be the right post or time to leave a comment like this…

but on the off chance that you happen to be reading 95 some comments and you come across this out…

Man, you’re Google videos are helpful and insightful. At least I’m able to put “talking head” to the things that matter the most to me and business as it relates to Google and the plethora of tools it offers.

That being said, I’m getting slammed with questions about Urchin 6, what are the benefits over GA and the general direction of Urchin6.

Would love to hear some stuff about that.

Thank you!
