Google Maps on your phone

I really enjoyed watching a friend play with Google Maps/Local for mobile phones. But I also use Verizon, so I can’t use it right now. πŸ™ If I’m lost in a new town and I’ve just come up from a subway, I’ll be forced to fall back on my Timex watch with built-in digital compass. And maybe looking for moss on one side of a tree.

Check out this song that Matt Waddell wrote about the new service. On the bright side, maybe I’m not the wackiest Matt at Google anymore. πŸ™‚

  4. I hope he doesn’t try to get that one on the radio. I think my speakers will break.
Is that what you guys at google do all day?

  5. Too bad all the best stuff is for US only πŸ™
When or when will Google services come at least to EU?

  6. Hopefully this will someday work with Verizon / EV-DO.

I have wireless broadband on my phone through EV-DO … with something like this, i wouldn’t need GPS … this is where MAPS needs to be fo’ shizzle! πŸ™‚

  8. that was wicked wacky at best.

  9. Artem, I know that’s a request that we hear often, so I’m sure it’s on peoples’ radar.

  10. Too bad my phone is not supported. It would be really cool if Matt created a video clip on that song πŸ™‚

  11. Any chance of going back to the old interface? I’ve been using the Google Local feature extensively since May and the recent improvements in the user interface ain’t. Haven’t tried the phone interface, but that may come up when I’m traveling.

I do like the satellite images very much.

  12. Oh man…

Matt Waddell sings as good as Bruce Springsteen!

And I heard MattΒ΄s song over and over again before going to bed yesterday and again this morning.

  13. I too am a verizon user so, it’ll be a while before I am able to use this I guess πŸ™

Where do we sign the petition???

  14. I know this is not what you are working on, but maybe you know an answer anyway.
I just came back from munich, and I used the google maps iphone app to find venues more easily. Just two problems that bother me a bit: – Say I zoomed in on my location with the “my location” button. then when I search for just “geschwister scholl platz” or similiar without the city, google maps (not sure about other devices/the web, but at least on the iphone) jumps to a smallish town several hundred kilometers away, even though “geschwister scholl platz” in munich was just a few blocks away. Only when I entered the city it finally knew what I wanted. Why can’t it just go to the nearest place with that name?
Also with business listings/clubs: Often these are known/ advertised as a certain name, but the name of the company running the place may be different or confusing in some way, but google maps only knows the name of the company, so if you know the common name and want to find the location of a restaurant or club, having to find out which of the weird company names is the right one gets kinda annoying.
So have you or anybody else here experienced this too, and maybe do you if this application behaviour is on purpose?
