Report on 30 day challenge: A picture a day

In August 2010, my 30 day challenge was to take at least a picture a day. It was a good challenge, because that month I traveled with friends to Tanzania and climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. I finally got around to making a picture-a-day public photo gallery with the pictures I selected. Here’s one of my favorite photos of the rain forest near the base of Kilimanjaro, for example:

Rain forest at the base of Kilimanjaro

It took a while to pick the photos, upload them, and add captions, so I hope you enjoy the photos!

  6. Looks really cool. But scary at the same time 🙂

  7. Well done, the picture reminds me of Avatar.

  8. Niiiice. Haha so true about the ‘Avatar’ mention above.

  9. I travel a lot and I didn’t find lot of place like this. It remember me geothermal hotspot in Rotorua in New Zeland. The same sensation of irreal.
But I never think before, that we can find this type of trees in Tanzania!

  10. Cool pic! Must be constant humidity there for all that moss to grow. Yes it does look very surreal ! You are quite the photographer.

  11. This picture you posted here is pretty amazing!

The stress ball and the mud bricks are also outstanding on the concept! 😉

  12. Thats really an amazing picture, great job! The tree in the bottom right corner looks like it has a hand!

  13. Looks like it was an awesome adventure – I am totally jealous.

  14. Excellent pic’s Matt, quick question, what kind of camera do you use? Also congrats on the climb up Kilimanjaro, not a whole lot of people can say they did that. Imagine what that tree has seen in it’s lifetime…

  15. Great shot, kind of surreal !

  16. I actually like #29….call me a simpleton.

Staring up at trees is really cool and always seems like it would make a killer photo. But it’s hard to get it to convey in the image. Tried it on lots of occasions.

  17. some of these are really awesome pictures …like taken by experts

  18. That is a very cool photograph, what an awesome sight. Enjoy the rest of your challenge 🙂

  19. Amazing photo, reminds me of my time in the peruvian cloud forest. (I spend some months in the loco mayo valley, near cuszo).

If you’re ever close to Peru, definitely check out the “backdoor” paths to maccu piccu. They are as beautiful as this picture and some more 😉

  20. Incredibly cool that you climbed Kilimanjaro… must have been an amazing experience. I wouldn’t have been able to stop singing Toto’s Africa while I was there. You know, the lyric that goes, “I know that I must do what’s right, sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti.”

Anyway, congrats on the cool achievement and thanks for posting the pics from your adventure. Very inspirational.

  21. Great shot it looks like a giant spider

  22. Whoa, those pictures are awesome. What kind of camera did you use?

  23. Very interesting. I wouldn’t have guessed that Tanzania was the location for this particular photo. Kudos, Matt.

  24. Wow, thats an awesome shot.

Reminds of a giant christmas tree, that is, looking up at one from the base.

    Funky!

  25. That photo is awesome, I think you missed your true calling!

  26. Hey Matt. Good pics. What camera are you using? just curious.

  27. Great photos of Kilimanjaro. Would love to do that hike. A friend of mine proposed to his girlfriend a couple of weeks ago on that mountain. Not sure the altitude sickness made the moment as romantic as it could have been!

  28. This photo look like Avatar world…..!!!!! Really amazing…..

  29. beautiful photo – I love to challenge myself with my photography and if your interested in sharpening your skills a pic a day is a great way to do it.Excellent work!

  30. Nice shot! Above all the pictures, this is the coolest.

  31. This is finally a 30 day challenge that I can keep up with. Even I can handle one picture a day. There was no way I could climb Mt Kilimanjaro. Kudos to you!

  32. The photo is astonishing! I wish I could see a place like that someday…

  33. Awesome photo! It really does look like something out of avatar the movie!

  34. The tree photo is one of the best photos I’ve seen in a while, thanks.

  35. Would be interested to know what kind of tree it is. Reminiscent of a moss-covered monkey puzzle tree?

  36. Matt –

I really like this photo. While at first glance it appears to be a black and white photo, there appears to be some green in the photo. I don’t know if you use any tools like Gimp or Photoshop, but a tweak or two always seems to help me present the image the way I remember it. Very nice, thanks for sharing.

  37. The tree looks great! it looks like a monster to me. I can remember Avatar from this picture.

  38. When having the means to travel the world I guess the take at least a picture a day challenge isn’t that much of a challenge. At least for me it wouldn’t be… Anyway, great photos, the rain forest is beautiful! 😉

  39. Absolutely gorgeous picture Matt! They are truly spactacular. These 30 day challenges are great – keep it up!

  40. That looks like an arachnid but it’s still a beautiful scenery. I have arachnid phobia.

  41. This picture project is really cool. It reminds me of a story that I heard about a professor somewhere up east that had a video camera surgically attached to the back of his head that streams live video 24/7 for a whole year…

  42. it’s amazing!

  43. Matt, those are some great photos. I think you should do it again for August of 2011!

  44. wow…. that’s a really mysterious image.
